wpm Posted December 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Okay, So I'm looking at getting a 35 summicron. I will shoot color and b&w, mostly b&w. I am looking at a 35 cron asph and a 35 cron with eyes. Am I correct in assuming that the one with the focusing tabs is a version II? My other thought, and okay, don't laugh, is to wait and get an x1 as my 35. That would also get me into digital. What is the conventional wisdom on this? I know, everyone has an opinion but I'd appreciate some thoughts.

earleygallery Posted December 31, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 31, 2010 I assume you use an M3 if you're looking at the Cron with eyes or goggles? The asph is the lens I aspire to so I guess I'd suggest that one, but also consider the Summaron 2.8 goggled, and the Voigtlander Skopar - I have both and use the Skopar most of the time on my M2. I've tried selling the Summaron but no takers so I'll keep it in case I buy an M3..... If you shoot film exclusively now then I seriously think you'll be disappointed if you buy an X1 (or anything similar) as your 35.
alexmann Posted December 31, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 31, 2010 Don't be fooled by the looks, the X100 is not a rangefinder Regards Alex

Ulev Posted December 31, 2010 Share #7 Posted December 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) For the price of a X1 ( or less) you'll find a nice second hand 35 summicron asph. I'd go for that instead ! Rgds Ulev Okay, So I'm looking at getting a 35 summicron. I will shoot color and b&w, mostly b&w. I am looking at a 35 cron asph and a 35 cron with eyes. christakis Posted December 31, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 31, 2010 For the price of a X1 ( or less) you'll find a nice second hand 35 summicron asph.I'd go for that instead ! Rgds Ulev That's exactly what I did and couldn't be happier! I could actually, only if I could get the 35mm Summilux for the same price Joking aside, I have a digital M so buying an X1 simply wouldn't make sense for me. I'm a big fan of the X1. Although I don't own one myself, I've seen A3 prints produced using an X1 and the quality is stunning. Everyone laughs at the X1 but it's a serious heck very serious little camera. Digital might be difficult coming from film as you need to do your own post processing but I think you will like it. So, if you are not ready to jump to a digital M yet, I would go for the X1. That's my opinion.
archi4 Posted December 31, 2010 Share #9 Posted December 31, 2010 A new Summarit 2.5 35mm is a wonderful lens if you don't really need the 2.0 of the summicron.
wpm Posted December 31, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted December 31, 2010 Thanks for all of the input and comments so far. Actually, I have an M6TTL, at DAG at the moment and I just found a single stroke M3. My thoughts on the 'cron with the eyes was that it would be useful on the M3 but wondered how the lens would perform. The asph is kind of a no brainer for the price, but again, I'm still paying off a mortgage, which is why I don't see an M9 in my near future. I know that people are loyal to their toys and have read so much about version A being better than version B. That's why the 'cron with the eyes looked appealing for it's price. I agree with christakis that the x1 IQ is amazing, rangefinder or not. As for the Summarit, I like it but can use the bit extra speed, as I plan on doing some evening/low light stuff, but no, I can't afford a 'lux, although I'd love one. Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming. I need to make a decision before these two get bought.
