goldchen96 Posted January 21, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted January 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everybody, I`m new to the forum and first of all would like to thank you all for enjoyable and informative threads, lots of good photographs (keep taking pictures, guys...) and the nice atmosphere especially in the international section! Â I have a question probably not new to many of you concerning focus accuracy: I`m a photographer doing lots of portrait stuff with shallow DOF. I`m into planning my future investments for the next 5 to 15 (?) years now and can`t decide between Canon EOS (full range professional line, good and fast primes) and Leica M8 and glass. I know about many of the pros and cons and obviously have to decide what suits best my needs, but it would help me a lot to hear what is your experience with focus accuracy in practice? Â Even though I have been into photography for 10 years now, I was shocked this morning when sitting down with my M6, a Nikon DSLR and 35mm primes trying to focus correctly on portrait distances at around 5 ft. away (without film). The Leica was so precise while using Nikon MF I could not really differenciate between eyelash and tip of nose trying to focus. it`s sort of hit or miss, especially with f-stops like 1.2 or 1.4. What do you think? Any suggestions? Â Julian Fels
Advertisement Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 Hi goldchen96, Take a look here RF focusing vs. SLR focusing experience. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest Bernd Banken Posted January 21, 2007 Share #2  Posted January 21, 2007 Julian,  it makes no sense to compare a RF - MF camera-lens-combination with a DSLR unmodified using a focusscreen designed for AF lenses. Change to the Katzeye TM and it works.  http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/cat--Nikon-DSLRs--cat_nikon.html  Bernd
goldchen96 Posted January 21, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted January 21, 2007 Bernd, thank you for immediate response. Right you are, but had the same feeling with my old Nikon F3, MF 2/35mm and split prism. Â Â Julian Fels
stunsworth Posted January 21, 2007 Share #4  Posted January 21, 2007 Julian  You'll the closer the subject the easier you'll probably find the rangefinder to focus compared to an SLR - and the rangefinder will be more accurate. You should also find wide angle lenses much easier to focus with the Leica. This is an area where I think rangefinders have a lot of practical advantages over an SLR.
