Dan Ryan Posted December 27, 2010 Share #1  Posted December 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi  I have inherited some filters. A photo is attached. In case it is unclear the codes are:  Gr GCYOO  Or GDOOK  2 GCOOL  They don't fit my Summicron 50, the Summaron 2.8 or the Elmar 90 f4 - too small.  Can someone tell me what lenses they would fit? Or direct me to a source where I can dig up the information. I don't want to trouble anyone to take time to check it out if I can do it myself.  many thanks Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Geschlecht Posted December 27, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted December 27, 2010 (edited) Hello Ryan, Â Welcome to the Forum. Â These are all 36mm threaded filters for use w/ 50mm Summitar lenses. I don't know the pitch. The pitch of the 39mm threaded filters for the 50mm Summicron which succeded the Summitar is 0.5mm. Â If you click the wiki icon @ the top of this page you can find a lot of very interesting information. Dan Ryan Posted December 27, 2010 Author Share #3 Â Posted December 27, 2010 Michael - much appreciated. The gear I am working with came from a gentleman who had owned a IIIg, an M2, M3 and the M4 which has fallen into my hands, along with various lenses and bits and pieces. So I guess at some stage he owned a 50mm Summitar. I wish I could find it and the other bodies! I have all the old purchase invoices, brochures and user manuals, but not the cameras:cool: I give thanks that the M4 and a good brace of lenses came down to me. After dinner tonight I may post some other pics of things I am trying to identify. Of course I shall first visit the Wiki link you mention. Â many thanks Dan
giordano Posted December 27, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted December 27, 2010 IIRC it's a tapered thread.
luigi bertolotti Posted December 27, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted December 27, 2010 IIRC it's a tapered thread. Yes, Summitar filters are strictly "proprietary"... Leitz used this kind of thread on this lens only... there is a dozen or so of Gxxxx codes for those filters: having made so many, and being Summitar a very succesful lens, they provided some adapters to use them on other lenses too...

ismon Posted December 27, 2010 Share #7 Â Posted December 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The SOOEY adaptor ring #13077 will let you use Summitar filters on E-39 lenses (Summicrons, etc.)
Dan Ryan Posted December 27, 2010 Author Share #8 Â Posted December 27, 2010 Thank you Ismon. Will there be any vignetting effect in using the 36mm filter on a 39mm filter lens? Dan
Guest Ron (Netherlands) Posted December 27, 2010 Share #9  Posted December 27, 2010 (edited) Thank you Ismon. Will there be any vignetting effect in using the 36mm filter on a 39mm filter lens?Dan  Normally one don't uses smaller filters on bigger lenses, but the other way around is no problem: so 39mm might be used on a 36mm lens with the right step-down/up ring, but one uses no 36mm filter on a 39mm lens (anyhow it won't fit).   btw couldn't find any special pages in Wiki dedicated to Leitz filters. To be supercritical, one could say that it would be better to have a BLACK adapter (but i think that SOEEY doesn't exist in black, differently from Summitar filters) to avoid the risk of light reflections ring-to-glass... but probably, in geometrical terms, is not an issue. I think (should have to try) there is no problem even if you want to mount a hood on your Summicrons 35/50... many types exist... but I think that the classic/conical black metal hood with clamping springs ought to fit normally.  With shorter focals the vignetting induced by rings can indeed be a problem... a typical tricky case is the Voigtlander 15mm with "massive" filters. jc_braconi Posted December 28, 2010 Share #13  Posted December 28, 2010 I do not think you will have more vigneting than the one generated by the lenses. Welcome, dear visitor! Dan Ryan Posted December 28, 2010 Author Share #14  Posted December 28, 2010 Thank you Signori Braconi & Bertolotti. Gentlemen, I am indebted to you all.  I shall now get the SOOEY. And since this thread started I have browsed examples of photos from the Summitar. I like the look it gives. So I shall keep an eye out for one of those also.  I appreciate the mention of using the hood. My gear includes one of these and I love using it now and then.  regards  Dan Welcome, dear visitor! ismon Posted December 28, 2010 Share #15 Â Posted December 28, 2010 Dan When I made the transition from screw-mount to M, I chose to standardize on all E-39 lenses. I never had any vignetting with the adapted Summitar filters; although I never owned the (E-39) 21mm F/4 Super Angulon. The 12585 lenshade works well with the 35 and 50mm lenses. Dan Ryan Posted December 28, 2010 Author Share #16  Posted December 28, 2010 Thanks Ismon. Is there a thread or a sticky in the forum about reliable dealers in second hand Leica gear? I have used B&H and KEH in the past and I know of Igor Cameras and Collectible Cameraa, but I have just come across Kevins Cameras who I had not heard of earlier.  But I don't want to start another thread within a thread, and I am not sure if this forum permits discussion of dealers.  Dan  P.S. because the AUD is at parity with the USD it is an advantage for us to deal with the US - even though I notice that some European dealers appear to have a very good range of gear - it is still expensive for us in Euros

Guest Ron (Netherlands) Posted December 29, 2010 Share #18  Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) Ryan, if you can't find a SOOEY, you can also look for the less known SOOQR which does exactly the same thing: put a summitar filter on a lens which takes 39mm filters. The SOOQR was made from 1954 until 1956, the SOOEY was made as from 1957.  Also a nice adapter to have is the FOOXH, in fact it is an empty E39 filterring in which you can put filter-glasses taken from other 39mm filters or from summitar filters. Please note that this only works if you have filters which have rings that let you screw out the filter-glass. So if you buy old filters, you better buy the ones were you can take out the filter-glass instead of the filters with 'pressed' glass.  If you can buy a FOOXH, make sure it has the inner ring needed to fasten the filter-glass.      Thank you Ron. I have been digging and found these informative posts:  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/38062-unknown-part.html http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/151564-fontenelle-archives-35-filters-interchangeability.html [ Fontenelle archives 35 - if the link is broken]  I would be grateful if all who have responded would forgive my stupidity for a little longer, however, would the use of this ...  "Leica Filter Adapter SOOEY/13077P (fits E36, E41, & Summarit Bayonet filters to E39mm thread) #1808xxx (10-) "  Attached to the lenses in the photos below ...  ... permit me to then attach the filters mentioned in my first post above?  many thanks Dan Edited December 29, 2010 by Ron (Netherlands)
