johnwolf Posted December 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just wanted to share that I received these REI convertible mittens, and they are by far the best I've had for winter photography. REI Thermo Convertible Gloves/Mittens at REI.com Even the thumb is convertible for using the digital M wheel. I've no connection to REI, but this topic comes up occasionally, so I thought I'd share this. John

Jeff S Posted December 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 22, 2010 What about the one customer complaint about the magnet being too weak to keep the folded part down? Is your experience different? Jeff
johnwolf Posted December 22, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted December 22, 2010 Jeff, I really don't know what he is referring to. I don't see a magnet anywhere, nor is it mentioned in the description or specs. They stay closed just fine. John
Jeff S Posted December 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 23, 2010 ...They stay closed just fine. The concern, I think, was that they didn't stay 'opened'...not that they didn't stay closed. See the 2 customer responses on the link you provided. If indeed there is no magnet, how do the tops, once retracted, stay out of the way when you're shooting? BTW, thanks for the link, John. I might check them out locally. Jeff
LeicaBraz Posted December 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 23, 2010 Look great. Fully closed they will prevent some of us (I am at the top of the list) from shooting so many uneventful photos.
Jeff S Posted December 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 24, 2010 I checked out a pair today at REI. Nice, but my size was sold out (holiday rush). There are indeed two round magnets built in to hold the open top back. However, the online customer feedback is accurate...they are weak and useless. The good news, though, is that the top of the gloves stay out of the way without the magnets. Another brand at REI, not as nice overall, had velcro tabs that worked more effectively in this regard. Jeff Oh, so those little round things are magnets? If so, they are indeed lame. But it's hard you see why you'd need to hold them open. With half your hand sticking out they couldn't exactly close. pico Posted December 24, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 24, 2010 Our local dive just got a huge delivery of Austrian military winter clothing including genuine wool sweaters, parkas, and shooting mittens. I'm in heaven. Super quality gear for the Tropics of MinneSnowta.
