andit Posted January 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Everyone, Just out of curiosity and a bit of fun, I hope, how does one address the M8. In terms of the correct use of the English language, it would be "a M8". However that just does not sound quite right. Would it not be better to address it as "an M8" ? Would love to hear what people think. Andreas
Advertisement Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Hi andit, Take a look here How Should One Address The New Camera. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted January 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 20, 2007 M as a letter by itself is pronounced as if it began with a vowel - 'em' 8, so I guess it's actually correct to precede it with 'an', I have always done this.
Tony C. Posted January 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 20, 2007 I'd suggest "mate".

philipotto Posted January 20, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 20, 2007 clearly an M8 is more popular than a M8 A query on google for Leica "an M8" returns 16,300 results, Leica "a M8" returns 2,330 results.
carstenw Posted January 20, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) You should address it as "Mr." Okay, okay, just kidding, and I am about to get hell from all the M8 owners in southern European/Latin/Roman countries, who undoubtedly think of cameras as female. Cruewell Posted January 21, 2007 Share #14 Posted January 21, 2007 Call it "la Madre de todas las cámaras" and, when not using it, place it on a little altar surrounded by candles (the kind that can't be blown off).

Guest flatfour Posted January 22, 2007 Share #19 Posted January 22, 2007 Steve - You are right I think. When talking of a letter of the alphabet it depends on the sound not the spelling e.g an A comes before a B and an M comes before an N or an O but after a K. The figure simply qualifies the letter, on the same basis - an 8 or a 7.
