I am finally considering giving in to my craving for a noctilux and since I already own the perfection that is the 50 lux asph I want the different look the original f1 noctilux gives.

Now if you want a nearly new one there are only a few places to get one and that would be Honk Kong seller on eBay such Nine Days photography - anyone had experience with them or recommend somewhere else together a nearly new one?

You have to be cautious! The Noctilux 0.95 is super rare now. The waiting from factory seems to be around 2 years. They do occasionally pop up here and there,My advice is to look out a bit before sending away tons of cash in any direction.

If you could consider a used Nocitulx 1.0 there are several pices around at reputuable places, i think Robert Caplan has one, and NewOldTime in Italy has quite a few. (One even 6-bit coded)

According to my dealer the glass for the 0.95 takes 2 years to cool - hence the wait.:(

(Yes, I thought the same and said "What?! Two years?? Are you sure it's not 2 days or 2 weeks?" He said, no, that Stephan Daniel had told him at Photokina that it takes 2 years.)

Jaay, are you already fixed on a certain version of the Noctilux?

Are you sure, you want one, or just curious, to try one?

I was the later, when I had the opportunity, to buy a mint last version f1 (I was weak, as my 50 Lux ASPH was in Solms at that time).

I bought it and love it.

If I had to do it again, I would do it differently though:

- rent, borrow or even try one (any f1 sample), to find out, if you really like the weight, the focus throw, the handling, the character, the focussing wide open, the image chracter, … (most of these really can only be assessed, when using the lens for a while though)

- decide, if what you have experienced during the trial leaves you hooked for one or if the "hype" is worn off quickly

- look for a battered, old user Noctilux, which goes easily 1000 − 1500 EUR less, than a mint last version with box and papers, if you are certain, you love the lens

- look for a mint last version sample, if you feel the slightest insecure about if you will keep and use it or not (these will sell better and keep better value than a used battered one)

The difference is more than 1.000,- EUR in your pocket and a nice user lens, which will not be babied later, but used.

I use mine still regularly (as I do the 50 Lux), but I do be careful about it, which can be annoying in times.

Consider also a maintenance cure in Solms if you buy an older Noctilux. I had mine coded and adjusted and it made a really big difference in the quality of the lens.

In the case you order from Belgium, you will have to add VAT (but sometimes you can be lucky and it is forgotten).

About the comment of the 0,95, I got mine after special order in France within 6 month of waiting.

hello...

actually it depends on the price, you have to pay for that lens: i think it is still overestimated, i hated the very dark corners (like looking in a tunn el..) that very often disturbed the nice look... but if You really want it, try to get a lower price under 3000 euro / 3500 usd in an ebay auction, or ask Meister Camera in Berlin, thy offer one very nice example these days..i will send an detailled pn to you

A version 4 for under 3.000,-EUR sounds like a steal (or a very heavy used sample) ;-)

When I was looking for Noctilux prices 1/2 y ago, nice v3 user samples were already over 3.000,- , while v4 samples usually where 500 − 1.000 EUR more, depending on condition (box, papers, coding, cosmetics, …).

Jaay, I don't want to talk you out of that v4, but to me (and many others, who have used a Noctilux), any screw in or bayonet lens hood Noctilux is indeed a better user, as the telescope hood v4.

The hood is very small and most importantly, does not offer real protection of the front element.

I use my lenses mostly filterless and would not put the Noct on camera into a bag or wear it over shoulder without a cap or filter to protect.

The versions with round lens hood before the v4 offer better protection.

The Noct v4 has one more disadvantage due to it's lens hood design: as you cannot take the hood off, the lens "naked" is bigger, than the older versions.

As the older versions offer the same optics and at least the v3 the same mechanics and barrel Ø, I'd go for an older user.

For me, the only reason, to go for a v4 Noct is the prospect of possibly holding better value for resale over a v2 or v3.

I have both the old and the new Noctiluxes. The vignetting from the older lens on the M9 is really quite severe; better with the newer lens though still plainly visible. This was not the case with the M8 which, with the smaller sensor size, only looks at the central portion of the image projected by the lens.

I've bought a couple of lenses from Nine Days on Ebay never had any issues, items as per description and speedy delivery. Based on my experience with them I would recommend them.

I'm another satisfied buyer from Ninedays - I've bought two lenses from them - the transaction went smoothly and the lenses arrived relatively quickly considering the distance they had to come. I'd buy from them again in a heartbeat.

Regards, Jim
