Few X1 questions

Hi, I have been wondering about few things i cannot find being discussed here.

1. DNG compression for the X1 : the X1 produces whopping 18mp files (m8 for example only 10mp). does that mean the x1's are actualy higher quality just like the m9 uncompressed ones?

2. Sensor: it has been said on this forum and also in some reviews that the x1's sensor is basically a d300 sensor. But, since the sensor sits much closer to the lens compared to a dslr wouldn't that be impossible? Just read the m8/m9 forum on the technical difficulties that brings. I would think that it is the same basic sensor but heavily modified for use in the x1 (very successfull btw). Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

You are forgetting that the difficulty with the M8/9 was that Leica had to find a solution to fit the problem, i.e. the proximity of the M lenses to the sensor and the issues it causes towards the edges of the frame.

The X1 has been designed ground up, i.e. the lens and sensor as a single unit.

It's not the same thing at all.

That makes sense- a lens designed to fill the sensor and to address the issues this thread starter is bringing up.

Also, addressing those concerns perhaps has something to do with the fact that both the X1 and the X100 mention that a fixed lens was needed for "optimal image quality" and that a zoom lens wouldn't work without transforming the camera into something that's no longer compact.

Along that line of logic, this is perhaps why the Ricoh has the lens modules so that each module is again, lens/sensor working together designed for each other addressing these issues.

Apparently, the zoom capability can't be addressed in a compact APS-C camera.

Further along those lines of logic, this is why the NEX's zoom lens has to be so big. Both the X1 and X100 mentioned a zoom lens would require so much extra space with a APS-C compact making it no longer compact. The NEX with zoom lens is not compact- it looks like a joke really with that hugely disproportionate lens attached.

So there it all is really. Without being lens experts we can see a consistency across brands and marketing lines.

We can imagine the difficulties that any manufacturer then would have spreading out a compact lens's image across a full frame sensor without optical issues. From this would all suggest that it is currently, optically, impossible.

The X1 produces 12 MP pictures, not 18MP like you said. That said, I find its RAW files a little more manipulatable compared to the M8s. Saying the X1 RAW is comparable tot eh M9s is not really valid, but it is a tad better than the M8 (IMO).

Would this have anything to do with the difference between CMOS and CCD? Otherwise said, are the X1 files roughly the same size as the M9s even though they are 7MP smaller because the diodes on the CMOS work independently (or whatever they are)?
