my m8 arrived a few days ago from robert white (always great to deal with them) and wow -- what a camera.

after reading posts on here and elsewehere I was a bit concerned about low-light noise but I am not concerned now: even at 2500 there is lots of detail and colour, even though there is some noise. images seem like an honest reproduction.

there is not the detail or quality of my CFV back, but (allowing for faster lenses) it has 4--6 stops advantage and is half the weight and size. tonal reproduction is almost as good as CFV. dynamic range is excellent -- if you open up 'black' shadows there is loads of info.

plus, of course, it is beautifully made and is the first handheld electronic device I have used with a clear and unfussy menu system (nokia take note).

forgot to add:

pic is an abandoned church in southwark, london (where I live) at dusk.

shot taken with zeiss 28/2.8 (uncoded -- obviously) at f2.8, 1/15 or 1/30s (can't remember which), iso 1250

not cropped

Good to see local work (I'm in London a lot of the time). A question. I've been working with the M8 quite a lot recently, but am still waiting for IR cut filters for all my lenses - only got them for the 21 and 50 at the moment. I've been noticing very significant IR contamination in a lot of images even taken outside in natural light. Do you have any experience of this + have you done anything to work around? Also interested to know if you're processing in C1 or using other software for RAW conversion. I'm sticking with ACR for the moment as I prefer the workflow..

Best

hi chris

I have noticed some IR problems, usually in electric light, affecting skin and the shadows cast by the light (which seem to look blocked). not yet done rigorous tests, but no terrible problems either. one thing I have tried to induce is blooming/ghosting/streaking etc but nothing to report, happily ! even at 2500 and pushed lots of stops, no nasty patterns are revealed. very pleased as you can imagine.

I am processing with raw developer (my favourite raw software) but noy yet found a set up that works as well as I want (took lots of experimenting to find one that works for my CFV). also using C1 (sometimes with jaime robert's profiles) and am pleased with the results -- phase one seem to be moving away from the plastic-smear noise reduction that used to blight some files.

hope this helps

dave
