carstenw Posted January 22, 2007 Share #21 Â Posted January 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have ordered one of the 2GB Ultra II cards with a built-in USB plug. Let's see how that works. They cost a little more, but can be used anywhere. I am also in a discussion with SanDisk about what might be wrong. They are apologetic and helpful, so far. Advertisement Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Hi carstenw, Take a look here M8 Mac Download Problem. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
blakley Posted January 23, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted January 23, 2007 I've always been a little worried about the mechanical robustness of the cards with the built-in USB connections, but it sure would be nice not to need a separate reader. I'd appreciate it if you'd do a mini-report on your experience after using the card for a while, Carsten.
plinden Posted January 29, 2007 Share #23 Â Posted January 29, 2007 Hi, I'm new to the forum. Having just received my m8 I am trying to understand how to operate it in all modes. Â While I have no problem downloading files using a card reader, when I connect the camera directly to my mac and use iphoto to import the images, NO IMAGES are seen by the program. (While I generally prefer to use the reader, I want to know how to make the other avenue for downloading work!) Â Here's the situation: the camera is recognized, and USB connection is indicated on the camera LCD, but I get the message "there are no items to import". This happens whether there are dng files only, dng and jpeg or just jpeg. No images are seen in the camera. What am I doing wrong? grantray Posted January 29, 2007 Share #24  Posted January 29, 2007 Hi, I'm new to the forum. Having just received my m8 I am trying to understand how to operate it in all modes. While I have no problem downloading files using a card reader, when I connect the camera directly to my mac and use iphoto to import the images, NO IMAGES are seen by the program. (While I generally prefer to use the reader, I want to know how to make the other avenue for downloading work!)  Here's the situation: the camera is recognized, and USB connection is indicated on the camera LCD, but I get the message "there are no items to import". This happens whether there are dng files only, dng and jpeg or just jpeg. No images are seen in the camera. What am I doing wrong?  Peter Linden  I have the same problem, sort of. I believe the issue is, for me, due to the firmware update. Before update, files recognized for auto download by Image Capture. After update, no go.  Also, iPhoto isn't the best when it comes to DNG files, and can distort file information if recognized, (I'm not sure iPhoto recognizes DNG or RAW at all). That's because iPhoto is primarily for point-and-shoots and is not a professional workflow. DNG is pure manipulatable data as opposed to jpeg, which is fixed pixel data. So, if you shoot DNG, even DNG + JPEG, don't use iPhoto. Use Capture One, which came with your camera, or Adobe's Lightroom. There are others as well, but either one of those tow will get you started. Have fun with your new camera.  -grant
carstenw Posted January 29, 2007 Share #25 Â Posted January 29, 2007 I got my Sandisk 2GB USB plug Ultra II card, and it works in the camera and reader, as well as directly in a USB port, so I am just using that now. Sandisk eventually claimed that the reader was probably unable to read the faster card at the faster speeds, and prompted me to send it back, but I can't be bothered, to be honest. It wasn't that expensive, and I will just use it with the Ultra II card for now. Â I recommend to buy the Ultra II, not Extreme III card, due to these problems. Guest WPalank Posted January 29, 2007 Share #26 Â Posted January 29, 2007 I"m a Mac user and recently ordered a Lexar Pro x133 2GB card on sale at B&H for $69 (which came with my new black M8). To my surprise, it came with a free Lexar card reader and a copy of Image Rescue 2.0. So far, I have had no problems (but I always format in camera and use a card reader.) Patrickxyz Posted February 3, 2007 Share #27  Posted February 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi,  I just want to confirm that the solution Bertram found for the problem in reading M8 written Sandisk Extreme III SD 2GB cards worked for me as well. The Hama USB 2.0 Card Reader 35in1 (9,95 €) works well on my Mac with these cards and the M8. Bertram, thank you for the advice.  Patrick
geoffreyg Posted February 3, 2007 Share #28 Â Posted February 3, 2007 FYI - Iphoto will not process DNG files - you get a preview, but if you open it up, you get a very badly distorted color rendition - which is unusable. Â One work flow is to Import the files into a folder - JPG's can go into Iphoto, leave the DNG's for later to be taken into C1. Â I've had some pretty good luck shooting BW JPG + DNG, taking the JPG's to Iphoto, then straight to a small printer for quick 4x6 proofs. After selection, work the DNG files in C1 and CS to make final prints.
