when downloading pics from my M8 (I save RAW plus JPG on a Sandisk Extreme 2 GB) the camera locks after about 5 or 6 pictures; downloading is not continued or resumed after that; the camera does not react to switching on/off anymore, and to make it work at all I have to open the bottom, take out the battery and insert it again; do you face the same bug, and what can I do about it; I do not have a suitable card reader at the moment (mine's too old to recognize the Sandisk Extreme), but I guess I will have to get one; BTW, I have followede Leica's advice to connect the M8 directly to a port on the computer; thanks for your advice

I agree with the person who's encouraging you to use a card reader. I have found that they're always faster and besides they allow you to leave the camera turned off. Everyone's making a fuss about the trouble of removing the bottom plate to remove the card, but if you're using a decent sized card it's far less frequently required than changing film in an M every 36 shots.

The SD card readers are cheap and convenient... some are just little USB port plugs.

Card reader is OK, but it SHOULD work out of the camera as well.

I have the same setup, ie: M8, Sandisc 2 Gig extreme, Mac (Intel and PPC) and the transfer stopped after 3 some pics. After reformating the Sandisc IN Camera - no more problems.

Werner,

do you use a card reader with the Sandisc 2GB extreme written by M8? Which one? I tried several ones and usually my Mac (Intel) does not recognize the card at all.

Carsten,

we're facing the same problem (I saw your own thread this morning). Te be sure, I took my Powerbook with OS X 10.4 to a computer shop and tried a recent card reader (MCab 15in1). Even this recent device did not load the Extreme 2GB to my desktop. I thought it was a problem with my "old" Vivanco 12in1 device, but now I know it isn't. I just saw in the net that Sandisk is offering their own reader especially for the Extreme cards. No local dealer has got this reader, and I won't order it since I do not know if it will work. I think I will have to phone or mail Sandisk about this. If they really need their own reader, they should say so in their ads, or they should update a driver for Mac OS X as fast as possible. It's not very comfortable to pay for a fast card and then enter the slow process of trial and error.

@ Patrick,

my cardreader is a SanDisk MicroMate, which i bought with a Sandisk 4 Gig SHDC Card (bundled) - the SHDC 4Gig does unfortunatly not (yet) work with the M8.

Now i have two 2 Gig San Extreme III and a Ultra 2, both of them work with no problems in the M8. As said before I had the same probs like you, transfer out of M8 to my MACs stopped after 3 or 4 pics loaded (i tried all programms like Adobe Bridge CS3, OSX's Digital Pics etc.. all the same). After formating the Cards in the M8 (tried first format in Win and Mac via Cardreader) i had no more problems, pics are loaded from M8 to Mac as you like it. Card reader works with no proba as well.

Best regards

Werner

Werner,

thanks for the information. Unfortunately, even after formatting the cards in the M8 it does not work. I have tried with two Extreme III 2GB card, one can't be formatted in the M8. I do not know whether this is a problem of the M8. I will check with SanDisk. Everything works fine with an Ultra II 2GB card.

Carsten,

it seems as if I have exactly the same problem as you. Did you ever talked with Leica or SanDisk about it?

Regards

Patrick

I have mailed Sandisk and asked them, since they manufacture both card and reader. If all fails, I will send the Extreme back and get an Ultra, but I really don't want to do that, as the Extremes are meant to be more robust in high/low temperatures, and faster, even in an M8.

Hi,

I have the same problem with a SanDisk III Extreme 2 GB and a 2 GB Lexar card: the card readers ( I tried 2 different types) are not able to read the cards if they are nearly full ( 150 and more pics). If there are only 60 pictures on it there is no problem. I use a Mac with OS X 10.4.8 (not an Intel Mac). I have sent two of the SanDisk cards to Leica, they have tested them but couldn't find anything wrong, but they tested with a PC. I have telephoned with them but they told me that this must be a problem of the Mac and not of the M8. I don't think so because the same equipment is working well with the cards coming out of my Canon cameras.

Mine don't work with a few or many pictures.

I am looking for options at this point. Has anyone tried an SD-to-CF converter in a Firewire card reader? I have a Lexar CF Firewire reader which always worked fine.

Has anyone tried the Sandisk foldable built-in USB plug SD 2GB cards with the M8?

Carsten,

I experimented today with two Extreme III SD 2Gb cards. I reformatted again in the M8 and took some pictures. I used three different card readers, including the SanDisc 5in1. On a Windows XP PC, with two readers everything worked fine (I wonder how long as it did not work some days ago.). It did not work with the SanDisk 5in1 reader. On an Intel Mac, the cards were not recognized by neither reader.

I have tried as well a SD-CF-converter with a Jobo GigaVu. There was no problem to copy the M8-pictures.

I wonder whether it is a Mac problem as there were problems with the windows PC as well, some days before. In any case, the combination M8 and Extreme III SD seems to me much very unreliable at this point.

Today I found a solution for my cardproblems. I bought a hama USB 2.0 card reader 35 in 1 for 9.95 € and now everything is fine. Card into the reader, reader appears on the dektop, pics to the file, all pictures visible and the photographer is happy. Hope I can help someone else.
