Leica 75mm F2 or Leica 90 F2.8?

For the moment I have two borrowed Lenses, until my elmar 28 f2.8 and my Sumicron 50 f2 arrive in the next weeks. I have a bit money left and I’m thinking of what should I buy with the 30% that Leica offers. My two options, which I can afford, are the Leica 75mm F2 or the Leica 90 F2.8 with the viewfinder magnifier 1.25x.

Are the 50mm and 75mm too close?

I can buy just tree lenses, so this is going to be my last purchase for a long time. Should I go for the 90mm?

The M8 is great!:)

Thank you

Both lenses are tremendous. If pushed to make a decision now, I get the 75/2 because of the one stop speed advantage.

Carsten nailed it: which focal length appeals to you more?

Wait a while before you buy. The M8 will consume all your learning cycles for the next little while, that's for sure.

Miguel, I am going for the Elmarit 24/2.8 ASPH as my first M lens. Sometime after will come the 75/2 and a 35 mm (not necessarily in that order). So in the end I'll have the equivalent to 32, 46 and 100 mm. But this will be over a faily long period of time, I expect to have lots of fun with the 24/2.8 for quite a while -at least while my budget gets... readjusted! :) A 90 mm =120 mm in the old SLRs, sounds a bit too big for how I've shot in the past, but this is all personal taste.

I find the 75 f/2 to be Leica's best lens, if you measure things in terms of resolution and sharpness. This lens certainly blows the doors off any of the 90's, at least per my taste. Close focusing with the 75 is excellent/ poor with any of the 90's.

No, the 50 and 75 are not too close....they are very different perspectives. The compression of the image (distortion) is slightly noticeable in the 75, where the 50 is quite natural [the best all around lens, not doubt in my mind]. Color fidelity of the 50 1.4 is also superior to the 75, I think.

Peter.

Not from my experience.

I had and loved the 75 Apo-Summicron since I got a used 90 Apo-Summicron.

I sold the 75 and kept the 90.

Mainly for the focal lenght, which allows for more background blur and is more distant to the 50, but I also somewhat prefer the colors from the 90.

Sharpness wise both lenses are in the same league (= amazing) and certainly the 75 Apo doesn't "blow the doors off" the 90 Apo...

Agreed though on the minimum focus distance of the 75, which is handy.

The 90 Elmarit is also said to be extremely sharp, anyway giving your choice Miguel, I'd get the 75 because it's an f/2 lens (and an amazing one :) ).

I have the latest version 90mm elmarit and it's very very sharp. If you have a 50mm lens I would go for the 90mm. That's just my opinion. Having both 35, 50, 75 and 90mm lenses is too much for me. I would either choose 35 and 75 or 50 and 90, and of course something at the wide end.

I have the 75 and the 90 elmarit and really they are both great lenses and actually I think the framelines on the 90 are better BUT depending on what you are trying to do also comes into play. i think the 90 draws a better image for portraits since it is not as clinical as the 75 which for me the 75 i use for many things. This one is a tough call and maybe the reason i have them both including a 35 and 50 lux in the mix. The 75mm does do one thing all the lenses don't and that is focus very close so that reason alone for me works and is very handy to have without getting into the macro lenses. Personnally if i had to pick one than most likely the 75 cron would be it. Now mine at the moment the focusing is skipping and i need to send it back to leica repair to fix it. Something seems off and it is bothering me but I need to slip this in betweeen jobs and just can't do that. The good part is i have a lot of work right now

Here's an image from today with the 90mm elmarit. A crappy shot and a dirty window so not fun to look at.

I like how usable this lens is wide open and that the lens never blocks the framelines, even with the lens hood pulled out all the way.

ISO 640, f/2.8, 100% crop, C1, cropped and converted to sRGB in Photoshop. NO sharpening and noise reduction applied.

The 75 F2 is really great. I sold my 90 mm F2 AA when I bought the 75 AA and have absolutely no regrets. The only trouble is that with the M8 the 50 1.4 ASPH is now my favorite lens whereas with the M7 the 75 was what I liked best. The "66.5 mm" ones gets with the 50mm on an M8 is great for portraits and I like the extra stop. The "100mm" one gets from the 75mm on an M8 is plenty long for most rangefinder users.

I think that's a good point that I didn't know! Thank you Guy!

The highest reproduction ratio for the 75mmf2 is 1/7 plus 1.33 in the m8. Very interesting. In the 90mm is 1/9 plus 1.33 in the m8.

When I change the frames manual in the M8 I see really little diference beetwen the 75mm and 90mm. It's the real diference bigger that it seems in the viewfinder with the frames?

Cheers!

The M8 is great!:)

With that compact lens set, I'd be tempted by the 90/4 which is an excellent lens...

That was one of my thoughts. But f4...

I think that the 75 would be good if I buyed the 90 f4 perhaps in the next years!

I really like to have a lot of Leica lenses.

Cheers.

The 75mm framelines are too small for the focal length. They did this to keep a clear viewing for the 50mm . So the long side is longer than shown. Now i have not compared the close focusing distance between the two but the 75 i count on to get me close , maybe someone has compared that between the two.

The interesting thing for me is that in theory and also when taking images I find 75 more attractive for the M8, but when I look at images from 90 on the M8 (or 135 on film Ms) I have often been surprized in a positive way.

I really like the 90 Elmarit, small , handles nice, good contrast and IMO kind of a warm, well balanced tones.

I have not yet decided which I like better (90 or 75).
