35 & 50 Summilux blockage?

I'm getting ready to purchase my first M (if I could just get my hands on a black M9) and I am still undecided about whether to search for either a 35mm or 50mm Summilux.

I was wondering, how much do these lenses block the viewfinder (within the framelines)? Based on the specs, it seems like the 35mm blocks less than the 50mm, right? Thanks

The area obscured varies according to the focal distance due to parallax adjustment (the frames move down and right as you focus closer). The Summilux 50 ASPH has a cylindrical hood the size of the barrel and of course the 50 framelines occupy less of the finder. With that one the obstruction is not noticeable once you use it a little. Just a small corner clipped off.

The hood on the 35 although short and much more compact than the previous model has a flared rectangular extension and intrudes more. At closest (worst case) it reaches up to the 135 bottom frame and across just past right edge of RF patch. You do get used to it. Part of the compromise shooting an RF and getting that big bright window.

Congratulations on your decision. You'll be very happy with the M9 and either lens.

The faster the lens, the greater the diameter, and the greater the intrusion into the bottom right corner of the viewfinder. A slower lens will intrude less - its a trade off. The blockage in the viewfinder quickly becomes the norm and one adjusts to it. I went with a 35mm cron and the 50mm lux and am very happy and find neither too intrusive. The 35mm cron is a great carry around street lens. It is small, light and intrudes very little. The 50mm lux is good for existing light and environmental portraits. Availability may be a factor in your decision as both the 35mm and 50mm lux are in short supply.

Anyone want to wager on how it'll take kjohn to buy his second lens ?
