sdai Posted January 18, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted January 18, 2007 "Surprisingly, we have received a large number of order for the lens..." Â That's a clear message to Leica ... if they could fix their price structure, they can sell more and make tons of money.

scott kirkpatrick Posted January 18, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted January 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mark, has the charge hit your credit card yet? Or will they charge only when it is sent? Â Has anyone else received delivery estimates on other popular lenses, in particular the 75mm Summicron 2.0? Â scott
marknorton Posted January 18, 2007 Author Share #8 Â Posted January 18, 2007 Yes, my charge was 30% less than the standard Leica price. My card has not been charged yet, I don't think it will be until the lens is ready to ship.

grober Posted January 18, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted January 18, 2007 USA net pricing, anyone? Â I received the long letter from Solms but I still have no idea what the net pricing would be for any lens bought under this program in the USA. I would like to order a lens but need the actual cost before I do so. Â Maybe this will be cleared up before June gets too long on the tooth. Who knows... jamriman Posted January 18, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted January 18, 2007 Come on Leica! Whats up with the USA discount info? I think its enough tourcher that I'm still waiting for my M8 back at Solms!
ho_co Posted January 19, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted January 19, 2007 Received a confirmation from Leica today for my order for the WATE + finder less 30%. Delivery time is estimated at 2 - 3 months... Mark--Congratulations! Â While you're waiting, consider using an IRa filter on it. Â I mean, you're the theoreticist and practitioner. If you use the 489, you won't get quite as good an IR removal, but you also won't get the red vignetting. Maybe with the wide fov of that lens the IR absorption filter might be better. wilfredo Posted January 19, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted January 19, 2007 I continue to wait for a letter with a discount offer (USA). Â Since Leica got a better response than expected, does anyone think this will move them toward lower prices for higher volume sales? Â Cheers, Wilfredo
marknorton Posted January 19, 2007 Author Share #15 Â Posted January 19, 2007 Wilfredo, Â If anything, increasing demand for Leica M lenses is likely to maintain prices, not lower them. In this situation, Leica lenses are supply constrained because while they can switch production between lenses, there's a limit to what they can produce; some of the processes involved resist automation and adding capacity takes months if not years, not to mention money. Â They've scored a bulls-eye with the 28/2.8 ASPH and the WATE because both of those lenses fulfil an identifiable need - an entry level lens for use on the M8 and a wide-angle solution to maintain the status quo for M8 users and a new pespective for film users. Â Does make me wonder how many R lenses - if any - are being produce right now and whether all lens production capacity has been switched to M lenses. bnelson Posted January 19, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted January 19, 2007 Just a hunch here, but I would think R Lenses are not a high item right now. I think most of the M lenses are in short supply and I would bet Leica is trying to expedite their production. Â Additionally I feel the R9/DMR fervor has died down. I have one but I'm shooting the M8 most of the time. That might change later after the M8 newness wears off. Â Bill
Jager Posted January 19, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted January 19, 2007 I think the M8 has probably reenergized sales of M lenses in general. When I placed my order with Tony Rose earlier this week for a 28 Summicron ASPH he mentioned that Leica was in the process of hiring back lens technicians (laid off over the last couple of years) to help address the recent surge in demand. I hope that's true and I hope the M8 is successful in reintroducing a long-term-sustainable level of demand for Leica glass.
Theodor Heinrichsohn Posted January 19, 2007 Share #18  Posted January 19, 2007 Received a confirmation from Leica today for my order for the WATE + finder less 30%. Delivery time is estimated at 2 - 3 months...  "Surprisingly, we have received a large number of order for the lens..." Same story with me, same sentence about "surprising" demand, same delivery 2-3 months. I opted to pay by bank transfer after receipt of invoice, so have not paid. My letter from Leica is titled "Auftragsbestätigung" = order confirmation. No mention of the free IR filter which I also ordered. Have nicknamed the lens WAiT.
