Would you stand up for Leica?

I saw something disappointing recently. I was at an authorized Leica dealer here in the U.S. when a customer came in with an older Leica and said they wanted to see the new D-Lux 5. The sales person showed them the new camera, and then immediately tried to steer them to an LX-5, saying it is the same camera. I wanted to say something, but businesses don't take kindly to customers disputing what their sales people say, so I kept my mouth shut.

So, would you have said something?

Maybe the LX5 carries a spiff?

Very often a salesman loses a sale when he does something like that.

Big dealer, small?

Generally competent store, I suppose, since you were there?

There can be many reasons for a salesman acts like that... they can have 1 D-Lux and 8 LX-5 in their shelves...they can be within some local campaigning managed by Panasonic...

Anyway (but I'm not a camera salesman) should I see a customer WITH AN OLD LEICA coming to buy another camera, I'd be very cautios to speak to him of other brands :D.

I'm of the opinion the sales person was trying to help the customer. It IS pretty much the same camera. If you don't need LR or a longer warranty you shouldn't spend the extra money.

If the customer went home with a Dlux5 and then found out he was not told about his options he would be justifiably angry.

I wouldn't try to justify Leica's profit grab on the camera...they put next to nothing into it's construction.

Simple fact is they are the exact same camera. Everything but the outside shell is the same.

And it has never been proven that the JPG's from the DL is any different then what you get from the LX.

Would I of stood up for Leica, No. But then I try to stay out of other people business.

Interesting (and wrong) last two responses...

In such circumstances I would point out the similarities and differences - the self-same ones that have been discussed ad nauseum here. Any buyer has the right to make an informed choice. The cameras may be similar (NOT the same, as has also been pointed out on many an occasion), but the "bundle" differs significantly.

That said, any buyer in this day and age who walks into a shop without having done their own research and relies on a shop assistant for an unbiased guide is barking, IMO.

As an aside I was once asked to leave a branch of Dixons in the UK after a spotty Saturday youth tried to shove a Canon SLR down a customer's neck. He was making ridiculous claims, making it up on the spot and, in the end, standing patiently waiting to be served, I said so. The prospective customer left, thanking me as he did so. A minute later the manager, fetched by the staff member, asked me to leave too, for "interfering in a sale". It was a long time before I set foot in another Dixons...

Regards,

Bill

I can recall that a camera shop in The Hague (not Minderman & Pisa/Konijnenberg) that also claims to sell Leica a woman came in with a camera with a full SD card. They happily sold her three additional SD cards (ca. 50 euro a piece at that time). No advice was given that cards can be emptied using a card reader or USB cable or whatever. That was the last time I went there.

I should have stepped in but I was too flabbergasted to wrap my brain around this process at the time.

Would I stand up for Leica? Yes.

Would I have stood up for Leica? Probably not: I try to let other folks run their businesses while I run mine.

Perhaps the sales person was simply -- genuinely -- trying to help, drawing the customer's attention to the less costly option. On the other hand -- and who knows -- perhaps the sales person earns a better commission on the non-Leica brand.

But whatever the facts of the matter, I doubt very much that I would have considered it my place to say anything.

Having spent many years working in retail (I don't now) I grew heartily tired of people who consider it their God-given right to contest, challenge or simply annoy and aggravate woefully underpaid retail staff.

Just to chat... anyone, I think, has had some odd/funny story in some shop... at a time I was searching for a certain UVIR filter (for my Summarex 85...) I entered a shop in my town, unknown to me, just for the reason it had a B+W sticker on the door... a young boy at the desk told me they have the diameter I needed ! ... it was indeed a UV... and he said "it's the same"... I tried to explain that with M8... no contest: camera unknown, issue unknown... ok, ordered by the Net... :o

I had a case where a store employee made up techno-gibberish claims for a V-35 he was selling. When the customer asked me, I gave her a more accurate description. She was unconvinced, explained that she preferred the other's explanation, and bought. You don't want to stop a good salesman moving your product, but you sure have second thoughts. :o

I wouldn't stand for a PanaLeica.

Please explain the really differences between the 2 cameras. Other then the outside shell/covering.

Sorry but changing clothes doesn't make anyone a different person and changing the outside covering of a camera, that uses the same exact hardware and operating software doesn't make it a different camera. You can spout this all you like but that doesn't make it true.

If you like I have posted all the user interface screen,

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/145657-opted-out-dl5-got-lx5-4.html

from a LX5 so you can take your DL5 and compare them. If you find any differences please post the screens that are different.

I have asked this a few times with no replies. No replies because they are exactly the same.

How about this?

Pricing only comes into effect if someone actually want's Lightroom 3.

No mention of this persons age that they're going to start want to learn photo technics etc. so a program like that might be totaly useless to them.

The LX5 alone sells for a lot less than the Leica version, so maybe that's why the salesperson steared them away from the Leica model and saved this person a bit of cash.
