matlep Posted November 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I went through my archive, and made a cruel discovery.... I love to shot 50mm. So I flipped through my archive for the past months and compared shots taken with the Summicron 50 and the Summilux 50 Asph. Almost all of my favorite shots were taken with the Summicron (!) I cant put my finger on it, but i think i like the way the image draws from the Summicron more then the way the Summilux does. I recently sold my Summicron because i thought the Summilux was all I needed. I might have made a mistake... Am i crazy?! Any input? Do i really need 1.4 anymore? Advertisement Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Hi matlep, Take a look here No summilux love..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted November 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 22, 2010 Have had both lenses at the same time. Sold the Cron because I rarely used it after I got the LUX. Looking back through nearly 4 years of images recently, 2.5 of them with the Cron 1.5 with both Cron and Lux, I like the images I took with the Lux more then the Cron. Looking at images shot with the Cron before I got the Lux I like them also. I just like the Lux images better. Do I need a 1.4, Yes. But that doesn't mean I can't stop it down. ho_co Posted November 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted November 22, 2010 Very interesting! The Summicron is obviously a much older design, and maybe doesn't have the same 'bite' as the Summilux. There's nothing wrong with preferring a particular lens' drawing to another's. Great that you had both lenses and the time to do the comparison! Thanks for posting! MarkP Posted November 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted November 22, 2010 ho-co's comment just goes to show that this is all in the eye of the beholder. The choice of lens really doesn't matter as long as technical limitations do not get in the way of the image you want to create, and you are satisfied with with the end result! Mark :) Personally,I'm delighted with my new 50 Lux (and wanted the extra stop), having used a 50 Cron for some months beforehand...again, personal preference. christakis Posted November 22, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 22, 2010 I haven't used a 50mm cron but can't fault the lux asph in any way. Way superior than any lens I have used so far. If you really prefer the cron, I am sure there's people out there who would exchange their cron with your lux in a heartbeat. Especially with the lens shortage! yanidel Posted November 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted November 22, 2010 I agree with the OP. I kept the Cron over the Lux Asph. I found the Lux technically perfect, yet the Cron has a rendering that I find more appealing. Question of tastes I guess.

I've seen and been impressed with your work with the Hexanon on a number of other sites. How do you find it compares with the Leica 50mm lenses? matlep Posted November 23, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted November 23, 2010 Thanks for the input all. I guess i need to get me a second hand copy of the Summicron to do some more testing. I´m not sure selling the Lux will do the trick, i guess i´m just gonna lust after it again But if somebody offered me a Summicron 28 and a Summicron 50 for my Lux i would consider it.... jaapv Posted November 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 23, 2010 Testing? Seems to me you do ( and did) a better job by going through your photographs. A brick wall is not going to tell you whether you like the "look"of a lens.
luigi bertolotti Posted November 23, 2010 Share #10 Posted November 23, 2010 Photos are A THING, the rendering of a certain lens is ANOTHER THING... you said that you liked more the pics taken with the Summicron ? Nothing strange... personally, in my archives, there are pics taken with a Jupiter 50 on Zorky which I like more than some taken with Summicron 35 asph on M8... (and anyway ... " never eat at a place named Mom's " " never play poker with a man named Doc " " never give away a lens named Summicron" )

I meant testing as in wich lens gets the most usage if i have both. But I´m not 100% sure. I mean the Summilux is fantastic... Why have more the one lens of the same focal length... jaapv Posted November 23, 2010 Share #12 Posted November 23, 2010 :DI didn't expect anything else... Too many brick walls and tape measures in this forum... What I did was skip the Summicron and have the Elmar-M next to the Summilux. I find it has just that little bit more of a classical character than the Summicron. And tha camera slips nicely into your pocket when you have it on.
Paolo.Battista Posted November 23, 2010 Share #13 Posted November 23, 2010 Well, I'm an R lens user, and all the Summicrons I own are perhaps my favourit lenses. And yes, when not needing to shoot at f.1,4 (or faster) for extreme low light work, I tend to prefer the rendering of the Summicrons too. Different lenses, different system, but probably the projects of the Summicrons tend to be quite similar at least in terms of the goals that Leitz designers want to achieve from a lens named like this. luigi bertolotti Posted November 23, 2010 Share #15 Posted November 23, 2010 I almost DID... when found a Red Scale one that was much finer than the one I had... but when at home, discovered it was a "diamond" while my previous was a "triangle"... so kept both... aymoon Posted November 23, 2010 Share #16 Posted November 23, 2010 I love using my lux, but by far my favourite shot ever taken was with a cron almost 4 years ago... wish I could have the luxury of having both... unfortunately, I need the speed of the lux so that's what I've got.... I have no complaints.

I've seen and been impressed with your work with the Hexanon on a number of other sites. How do you find it compares with the Leica 50mm lenses? Regards, Mark Thanks Mark. And yes, you are right, I have a fast alternative with the 60mm Hexanon. I had written a review on its performance if you are interest Street Photography in Paris How does it compare with the other M lenses : - at F1.2, it has a look similar to the 75 Lux with a somewhat less smooth bokeh - F1.4, it is simply the sharpest M lens on center at this aperture. Corners lag which creates an amazing transition from sharp to unsharp. - F2.8 - F8, max sharpness on whole field, maybe slightly less contrasty than the Asph. Ergonomics wise, this is the easiest lens to focus I have owned.

Have been looking out for one for a while on the net, not surprisingly with NO luck. Let me know if you find one you want to sell:D (as if!). With respect to FOV, a 50 can be cropped to 60 without significant loss of IQ on an M9...I think it's more the characteristics of the lens and thinking about images with a 60mm perspective. I'll 'struggle' along with the 50mm & 75mm. Regards, Mark

The list of lenses i should have kept, keeps getting longer. On the other hand if I didn´t let them go i wouldn't have the opportunity to have the lenses i have today. It´s difficult
