Leica's offer of 30% off the price of a lens

I have received the letter from Leica (but not the M8 yet) explaining how to get the 30% discount on a new lens. The quoted «special» price for a 28/2.8 asph. is 945€, ie $1,435 CAD. Add to that a roughly estimated Canadian customs tax of 15% (and that's very optimistic), and the price is now $1,651 CAD, or about what my dealer sells it. Or even more.

Quite an offer from Leica! Void outside the EU, or at least in Canada. But the M8's problems are world-wide. Thanks, Leica.

Why bother? At least, my dealer will get his cut.

Now that a Canadian letter with Canadian prices has been issued, has anyone received a US updated letter with US prices? Or, since the original poster is translating from Euros, perhaps he is talking about the late December letter with one price for the world (including German VAT).

I am being told that the 30% is only if your M8 is one of the first batch that had to be sent back I don't know if this includes the US one's but if you got one of the newer one's after some date in November the 30% does not work.. they will only give you two free codings

That's not right. The first letter I received was quite clear that the offer was extended to people who, like me, purchased in December and received an M8 that had received its hardware upgrades. The thing that was not clear was the price if the purchaser is in the US. A new price list has been coming for a while now.

Afaik, the prices quoted are end prices, including all taxes, Canadian too, plus shipping. Your letter clearly states that.

Can you quote the sentence in the letter (if you have it, that is) which states that? My letter is in French (I'm French-speaking) but they use terms I'm not at all familiar with. Also, if what you say is correct, did Leica had a deal with all customs departments throughout the non-EU world? I don't understand how this thing works. And what about the 19% TVA (VAT) that's due in Germany and many EU countries, and which is supposed to be included for EU shipping? Did Leica substract that for non-EU shipping, then add customs duties for each different country?

Sorry if my questions may be basic for certain people, but I'm at a total loss, here.

here is the text of the email sent by Leica after the first letter was issued. Are you sure your letter is the new version or just a translation of the first letter?.

Dear LEICA M8 Customer,

In our haste to respond as quickly as possible to LEICA M8 owners regarding our CEO's lens offer, we might have mistakenly sent an incorrect version of the price list to some customers.

1. We prepared two versions of the price list - one for countries that implemented a Value-Added Tax such as the EU and Canada, and one for countries that do not have a Value-Added Tax structure.

2. Also the price of the LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/1 was wrong in both price lists.

3. The prices both price lists represent the complete price that the M8 owner pays to Leica - that means all applicable customs duties, VAT (where applicable) as well as shipping and customs clearing costs.

In the very near future, you will receive the correct price list for the country you live in, and the prices will reflect a price approximately 30% lower than the average Suggested Retail Price of these Leica products worldwide.

We again apologize.

Kind regards

In my opinion confusion still reigns. I think it's a mistake to lump the EUand Canada together on this issue. Both places have a VAT (in Canada it's GST and Provincial Sales Tax) but the big difference is in EU VAT is included in the list prices and in Canada the taxes are paid over and above the purchase price.

There is also import duty to consider.

Why can't Leica be more specific on this issue. I would love to asume that I can purchase the lens from Leica, have it shipped for free and not pay any duty or GST or PST when the lens arrives (which is the usual way) I don't have faith that this will work as there is always a bill to be paid on collection of the imported item,

Leica please make it clearer for us Canadians

Well if you calculate the 16-18-21 with the finder it works out to about $5325 Canadian delivered from BH. Retail price in Montreal $5024 plus gst plus qst. Delivered from Solmes $3721 Canadian. Seems to be a pretty good discount about $2000 off Montreal retail prices.

Don't see how it could be any clearer. This directly from their email.

What makes you so sure that you won't have gst and qst to pay? Do you really believe Leica either got a sales tax exemption from both Canada and Quebec, or will collect them from us on their behalf?

Well if you read the email or the line as I have quoted above it says that they will be paying the shipping, duties and taxes. This is a direct quote from the letter and email from Leica.

Even if you did add the gst and qst it would still be a significant savings.

Olivier:

If the Leica price includes tax, as they say, and you take the Montreal price and add the HST, the discount from the Montreal tax paid price is about 28%.

In regards to taxes, couriers allow the tax and duty to be charged back to the shipper. This is what Leica will do. The lens will still go through customs and a customs broker, but the broker will be charging Leica, not you.

Here's the status, as far as I can tell from what I have received myself and from previous threads, of which there has been one every 4-5 days:

The original letters and price list went to European, US and Canadian purchasers or 100% depositers in the last week of December. There may be some people who bought or at least paid in the Christmas rush who still haven't gotten their letter, because...

The price list had a puzzling price for the Noctilux, it was in EUR and it clearly included 19% German VAT. The accompanying language assured everyone that this was the world price, and suggested that because Leica wouldn't have to pay the German VAT on lenses shipped outside the EU, they would use that savings to pay the shipping, customs, and local VAT in other regions, leaving the same net price, no additional charges. For the Canadians that might be fair (VAT in Canada is 12% n'est ce pas?). But the Americans howled in anger, that the US has no VAT and almost no customs, so $500-1000 in savings had just vanished for them. Leica then issued the Dec 29 email saying, "wait, while we correct a possible error in the price sheet and issue a new price sheet for each country..."

That's the last I heard. Has the other shoe dropped yet?

Yesterday I have received the letter with the price list from Leica.

I am living in Spain. According with the letter, the prices are end prices delivered at your home.

Comparing the price list with the market prices in Barcelona, the price list is 30 % cheaper.

Is the 2 free codings in the letter or a separate coupon that came with the camera? I saw a coupon for 2 free filters but nothing about free codings. Mine is the 2nd batch.
