pgk Posted November 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just out of curiosity, how many members of this forum actually have any form of regular or 'scheduled' servicing on their Leica cameras and lenses? Or do people just wait for a problem to occur and then get it fixed? I just wonder, because most mechanical devices do need some form of regular servicing, even if its merely to replace old lubricants, seals, etc.. But I do get the impression that with cameras and lenses the service interval is regulated by faults developing.

Hi Paul, I'm a relatively new convert to Leica (about 2.5 years) but have been using my M7 heavily during that time and definitely fall into the "wait until a problem occurs" instead of regular maintenance. I don't recall the owner's manual calling for regular maintenance but may have overlooked something. I have had zero issues with my M7 or my lenses - at this point the 50mm summilux asph & the 24mm Elmar. Best, John
andybarton Posted November 17, 2010 Share #3 Posted November 17, 2010 I have had my M2 CLA'd by Leica in the last 5 years. It is exactly 50 years old this week. I don't anticipate it needing any further service on my account. My M7 had a CLA when they replaced the DX reader for the optical one. Again, I don't expect that to ever need servicing again in my lifetime. If you are an extremely heavy user or are working in extreme conditions, then things might wear out, but in general once every ten or fifteen years is the most often that you might need a clean. Nicoleica Posted November 17, 2010 Share #4 Posted November 17, 2010 I've never had occasion to require a CLA on my Leica cameras, but my Nikons get by with a CLA every 30 years or so.
jaapv Posted November 17, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 17, 2010 If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. However, for the digital cameras the year's guaranty that comes with the CLA might be worth it.
luigi bertolotti Posted November 17, 2010 Share #6 Posted November 17, 2010 I had serviced some of the mech bodies I bought used (the last was a M2... in 1993 I seem to remember), no more. But I don't shoot big numbers... having film backups, I wait for my M8 to have some fault to have it serviced (not that I hope it happens soon... ).
