canlogic Posted January 18, 2007 Share #21  Posted January 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Tim, It doesn't surprise me, but it worries me. Canon, Nikon and Sony are hardly in the financial straits that Leica is in, and they have had no difficulty keeping their inventory pipelines full. It's also easy to buy a third-party battery for any of those brands. I'm simply not excited about owning a $5K paperweight if Leica goes belly up and no one else makes a replacement battery.  Larry  First I don't know that they are in dire finacial difficulties. Aftermarket batteries became available for my 1D quite awhile after the camera came out same with the battery type for my 5D, the M8 has been out for 2 months. I would suppose that if warranted someone will make a battery for it. Spares are available and will probably be available in relative abundance soon. As I said before when I ordered mine it only took a week or 2 to get it. They were in demand for awhile so were hard to get but I think that is changing. canlogic Posted January 18, 2007 Share #22  Posted January 18, 2007 Tim, where did you get your battery, please? tnx.  I got mine from LeicaBoutique in Montreal.

wparsonsgisnet Posted January 18, 2007 Author Share #24  Posted January 18, 2007 there is no magic to batteries  That's correct. That's why they all stink. Someone needs to do some serious work in this field.  If they were any good, not only would they last when you needed them, but we'd all be driving cars that ran on them. Lead-acid batteries are slightly different from Li-Ion ones  lol....quite right the 2.2 volt lead-acid cells stand higher than a man and as a unit, the combined battery can weigh 800 tonnes  there was a project up, for the future upgrade of a diesel electric submarine in which the use of metal hydride batteries as an alternative was proposed these cells would provide around 2.5 times the range and more importantly more than several times the dash speed power enough to raise 'a' hypothetical 30 knot speed, to 40+ knots but draining the entire battery in just 1 hour

Tim,  Read the finacial press, Leica has been struggling for several years. I certainly want them to do well and have spent more on Leica equipment than any other brand.  The 5D takes the same 511A battery that Canon has been using in its DSLRs for more than five years. I bought an Impact brand 511A replacement for my 10D four years ago -- long before the introduction of the 5D.  I'm sure the M8 battery situation will get better soon, I'm just a little impatient. Guest smep_reloaded Posted January 18, 2007 Share #29  Posted January 18, 2007 We had a lot of good ideas in the German Forum during the development time of the M8. But I think nobody of the Leica engineers had ever read there.  The M8 has got a remote-connector to the computer, but the M8 is no studio camera, so this feature will be used very seldom.  If the M8 had a connection for a power cord Leica could offer an extern battery case for Mignon Cells (AA) and at nearly every place of the world we could find batteries to power the M8 if there is no possibility to charge the original battery.  I hope the M9 will get this feature, it would be very important for a travel and reportage camera!!!

I meant the type of battery for the 5D in that when I got my D60 it was awhile before I could get aftermarket batteries and I think it was the same battery as the D30. feyeping Posted January 18, 2007 Share #31 Â Posted January 18, 2007 After two months' waiting, I have just got my spare battery (and hand grip) from the local dealer. The battery costs about US$102.00.
scott kirkpatrick Posted January 18, 2007 Share #32  Posted January 18, 2007 Thanks, Guy. I called Tony because I had a really nice talk with him a couple of weeks ago. I told him you are the guilty party. I ordered one -- they are expecting 75 batteries on Friday (all lurkers, take note).  I wonder why Leica didn't think to supply remote power when they gave us remote control on this body.  Lurkers, a warning, Tony has promised most of his 75 already. Don't wait. Also, his price is a good one. And I'm in the line ahead of youse.  I wondered about the lack of external ac input, too. I guess it is a weather concern, and they are rather fixated on the integrity of their brass bottom plate. My Ricoh also has no AC external input, but they sell a battery-shaped contact with wires coming out the bottom, and left a tiny gap in the battery door to make room for the wire. Olympus oscillates on this -- some of its DSLR's have an (expensive, unique!) external AC contact, others don't.  scott

These old-tech batteries always work right, are dependable, and can be trusted.  All the rest stink. Just ignore the first, ignorant rant.
