innerimager Posted January 17, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted January 17, 2007 I have very limited experience with the lens, and only with the M8 and RD-1. I do believe the M8 renders the tonality and subtleties of the lens better than the RD-1 does, so I give the M8 some credit as well. best.....Peter

bnelson Posted January 17, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted January 17, 2007 Peter... Â This image reminds me in some way similar to a color version of much of the work of Alfred Stieglitz in his Camera Work. Not black and white of course but a somewhat similar "dreaminess" to the image. Â Have you printed this image and if so how did it look in real life? RainerJ Posted January 17, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted January 17, 2007 Hi, having a Noctilux (on a M7), and waiting for my M8, I find the Noctilux not the best choice, because of its weight and size. Â On the other hand, the picture was taken at Iso 160 and 1/22 s, so the Noctilux was the best choice here, and presumably af F1. Â Great picture. Â Â Rainer. Probably sold more Leica's than there reps. LOL   Seriously though i would never recommend something that i truly did not use myself and was not happy with the results. To me these are the best out there in this format the DMR and the M8
msr Posted January 17, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted January 17, 2007 I don't like the photo at all. Â And I know I will get flamed for this valuation but I find the plane of focus so narrow the vase dissolves into (and I've said this about someone else's Noctilux image) an almost hallucinatory bokeh which is quite unsettling. I'm seeing too many Noctilux images where the lens is being used as an upscale LensBaby http://www.lensbabies.com/index.php?page=lbo/galleries Malcolm

Hi Rainer- Good to see you here and your opinion of the photo means a lot to me. I am especially (exclusively?) interested in this type of use of the Noctilux, at F1 and as low iso as I can hand hold. Highly specialized use of a lens, but I think it will prove rewarding. I'm quite happy with an old 50 rigid summicron for my regular 50mm lens. best...Peter

Guest guy_mancuso Posted January 17, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted January 17, 2007 Personally i like the Noctilux but you need to be VERY careful with it's look. Some backgrounds look too bizare but it has a quality that others don't have . For me it is a question of use and with a Lux this decision to get one is a mental debate. Of course having the money for it counts too

innerimager Posted January 18, 2007 Author Share #19 Â Posted January 18, 2007 Point well taken and even more demonstrated there, Gerhard. Mark- I got mine "like new" used for $2700, about what I guess it will go for with the discount. If I hadn't picked it up, it would be my 1st choice to apply that discount to. Tony C. Posted January 18, 2007 Share #20 Â Posted January 18, 2007 While I agree with Malcom that the subject photo is not an ideal example of the Noctilux signature, I don't believe it to be an indictment of the lens (or Peter). Â There are countless examples of extraordinary Noctilux images. The less pleasing examples, in my view, often speak to the difficulty in using that extraordinary lens to its full potential. I would liken the Noctlux to a high-end sports car, in that they are specialized tools which are capable of producing fantastic results in the right hands, under the right conditions, but leave little room for error. Â Finally, there is sometimes too much attention paid to the bokeh issue. I happen to love the Noctilux bokeh signature, but what really sets the lens apart are low light and night shooting capabilities. Â Tony C.
