Leica M len to Nikon body ( Visoflex adapter)

... I wonder what can happen if one mounts on a Nikon the "Visoflex" adapter, mounts onto it an Elmar 90 RETRACTABLE, and starts to retract the lens... :D... I wonder if before interfering with the mirror it can focus to infinity... if so, one could achieve a 90mm lens with an exceptionally wide range of focusing...with a very rough focusing action, indeed :D

Wicked idea, Luigi! :)

And someone on this forum is just crazy enough to try it. :p

Really crazy ... wicked idea but impossible, when coming back from joking to math :o : be L the length (flange to front ring, millimeters) of the extended Elmar 90, be R the retraction length you apply to it... the Elmar focuses to infinity in a plane that is at 27,8+L from its front ring... when mounted on a Nikon+adapter for Visoflex lenses, extended, its front ring is at 68,8+L from the film/sensor plane : to be able to focus it to infinity you must apply a retraction R such that 68,8+L-R=L+27,8 ---> R=41 : impossible that the poor Elmar retracts so much... I just measured mine : max retraction 35mm :(... but the back protrusion of the retracted lens is only 12mm... at least, it does not interfere with the mirror (the adapter must be 68,8-46,5=22,3 mm long).

Anyway, I'd be glad if someone tries the combo : those damned 6mm (41-35) mean that the Elmar 90, completely retracted and at its nominal infinity, focuses at 5,7 feet about (my Elmar is scaled in feet)... good for full-face portraits... and if someone likes to machine a tube a bit shorter... voilà the Leica universal Elmar 90 for Nikon, with embedded Macro extension tube !!! Ask Milich...

Luigi, you're my kind of guy. :)

I just ordered the Viso to Nikon adapter and was thinking I might need to buy the 90 Macro. Whew! Thanks for checking it out for me!!! :D

Of course, I referred to the OLD Elmar 90 retractable... :)... I was fascinated by its long tube... :D. But, given that you'll have soon the adapter, you can achieve the same "flavor" (and WITH infinity focusing) buying a standard old Elmar 90 and the OUAGO (in case with OTQNO...) .. if it is a "3 element" like this You and your Nikon will be pleasantly surprised...

I should say that when I mounted the Noctilux on my D3 it's already recessed inside the body. From what I can tell, It's almost hitting the mirror:(. Oh course mirrors can be shaved.:p. Or just take it out the mirror entirlly and just use it in Live View.

Ok I am losing it now:)

Hello Everybody,

As a person who has been using his Tele-Elmar 135 on His Minolta 101 from infinity to 1 : 1 sharp as a tack in one unbroken sweep since the 1980's the conversation throughout this thread starts me thinking fondly about the days when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Interesting conversation in it's modern connotations though.

Best Regards,

Michael

Michael, you're right. I'm just rediscovering the excitement I felt when I first tried the 400/6.8 and said, you mean an M camera can do that? :)

Dare I mention it's about the only thing I know that still works the way it did in the 60's? ;)
