Tiep that (non-Leica made) adaptor increases the flange distance of an M lens to that of a Nikon F (adding just under 19mm). So it should provide infinity focus. This really just like the popular adaptors for Four Thirds cameras, for example.

Do keep in mind that most Nikon bodies will not meter at all with that fitted. Some enthusiast or pro ones may, albeit only stopped down. Naturally you have to focus and stop down manually.

Have fun!

Thanks you a lot. I have known that if adapter is used, it must focus & stop down manually only. but, you have known that some of nikon bodies can meter automatic while you set ( A). D300/ 700/ 3x..

If anyone have tried with this adapter. Pls give me more advices/ photo if possible. is it can fit all leica M lens?

tks

The only lenses that will focus to infinity are lenses made for the visoflex reflex focusing device and they are all telephoto lenses. Some need to shed the normal RF focus mount which is replaced by a short mount + adapter, 90 4.0, 90 2.8 135 4.0 135 4.5 135 2.8. Others such as the 65, 125 2.5 200 4.0 280 4.8 400 and 560 use the normal furnished focus tubes. Take care you use 400 &560 with M mounts as it was also furnished with R mounts and that tube is too long.

I use all the above lenses listed above on D700 & D3 and they work perfectly in M and A mode, at least as good as Nikons metering works which ain`t they hot in my opinion.

Lenses shorter than 65 can be mounted, but they will only focus in the close range say

12" at most.

Results are a more contrasty image with better color saturation and more detail in shadows and highlights. They will not be significantly sharper. The AA filter over the Nikon sensor takes care of that so it needs to be removed. Leica does not use them on their cameras.

Try an M9 if you want sharp.

I also use Fotodiox Nikon mounts on R lenses. The 28 and 35 PC work well. 100 APO is a killer as are all the APO lenses. They put Nikon lenses to shame. Would be nice if they reworked Nikons to accept R glass so it had auto diaphragm and would meter open.

Alas they introduced S2 which 99.9% of mortals can not afford. Even better if they made an R digital, but I am not holding my breath.

My nature set up for close work is 90 2.8 or 135 4.0 on the universal focus mount with an adapter to go on the Nikon. The D700 with Katz eye screen allows me to split image focus to around f 6.8 or 8. This makes for nice light travel and outstanding images.

My mistake assuming that this was just a spacer arrangement like the four thirds adapters apparently. So it's just a prism-less Viso body in effect then except that the rear bayonet is an F mount?

Obviously you have to stop it down to meter with it (on the cameras that will meter with it at all) since there is no auto diaphragm to control.

I think I'll stick to my M9 :)

Looks like they make some useful adapters in their range anyway including an R to M, cool!

Well the issue is simple : M lenses focus to infinity when their flange is at a distance of 27,7 mm from the sensor... there is no DSLR (or even SLR) that can do this.

The Visoflex is a "big spacer"... a mirror box fitted in front of the Leica body... so that Visoflex lenses can be adapted to many DSLR with a simple "tube" equipped with the right mounts.

Is anyone else bothered by Amazon's perceived need to create a fictitious list price from which to "discount"?

The Amazon link above cites the list as $199.95 and tells me I save 60% by buying from Amazon:

But the Fotodiox site shows:

Same price, but why does Amazon think it's beneficial to mention a higher price?

This is what you get when you mount a 50 1.0 Noctulux for Leica M on a Nikon D3 with the lens focused at infinity. Even with the lens inside the body there is no infinity. That being said it might be interesting to do some macro @ 1.0

Thanks for the photo and the recommendation, g!

I hadn't heard of this adapter before this thread, but now I know I need one. :)

I wonder how many of the 39mm to Nikon adapter Fotodiox sells. Perfect choice for the 200/4 without OUBIO. ;)

Actually, the first time I ever used a Leitz 400 f/6.8 was about 1982 - a Visoflex version with adapter to Nikon F mount. They've been around for a while, but the end of the R system has boosted the adapter market.

Or...a venerable Focotar 50 used as a Macro Lens... ought to be a strange look... ;)

About funny possibilities with those tubes... I wonder what can happen if one mounts on a Nikon the "Visoflex" adapter, mounts onto it an Elmar 90 RETRACTABLE, and starts to retract the lens... :D... I wonder if before interfering with the mirror it can focus to infinity... if so, one could achieve a 90mm lens with an exceptionally wide range of focusing...with a very rough focusing action, indeed :D

But then you can't use the 90 & 135 on the Universal Foc. Mount! (and the 65 too, if I had one.

Exactly my thought, Gerry! :D

I've got the 65 and the 200, but somehow ended up selling my 90. And someone stole the 400/6.8.

Leica used to be the plumbing supplier to the photographic world, but now that they've got out of that business others have actually taken up the slack. :p

And never use Old Age as an excuse to someone who just said OUBIO! :)
