After one month of shooting with M8

I sent my M8 back for the update on 01/03/07, so I went back to my M7. I must confess that I was getting used to viewing my pictures just after taking them on the M8. That feature is definetly missing o the M7. There is something to be said for digital.

@ Marc--and everyone with kind words for the profiles--thanks again, and you're very welcome!

I loved the M8 so much when I got it I would have worked the colour anyway, but it's nice to be in the right place at the right time with the right hack to help other photographers out!

As for something from Leica, I'd love a Nocti, if they have one handy ;) But I'm truly gratified that people like them as much as I do.

@ Bill, I've found it takes me, on average, about 6 months of shooting to really get the wrinkles out of any new technology digital camera, to the place where I'm comfortable with the quirks (though I have to say that families of digicams, like Canon 1 series, or Leica DMR and M8, have their family resemblance in processing, so having the DMR prepared me for the M8 workflow).

And yes--the V1 profile and the low-sat profile are color conservative (quite neutral and low-saturation). The low-sat version is the same as the V1 regular profile with a single saturation adjustment in PM5.

The V1 chrome version is quite over-saturated, actually, and also has a contrast tweak in addition to color balance changes. But it's fun to use (and, if you want to get closer to an ideal-ish color balance for non color-critical stuff, "click in" some extra green-blue in the color wheel in C1 and see where that goes).

Thanks Jamie, that makes me feel right at home.

I got a C---n G5 to learn digital before the D2 arrived. Following a long love affair with the D2, I found the M8 totally intuitive to use. But, I'm still getting the hang of it, after 1 month.

All the help that I have received from so many people on this Forum have keep me going fpr 3 years now. I have already produced one picture that I would rate as a candidate for a 40-inch print from David Adamson.

So, again, special thanks to you, Jamie.

You don`t have any good image to share? predicteble :)

Ouch! One might suspect a bit of cynicism behind that smiley, Vlad.

Well, in my defense… I live in rural Virginia and my internet connection is... drum roll... 28.8 dial-up. I’ll take my laptop down to the Panera Bread in town (which has free WiFi) once a week or so to download software and browse image-heavy threads on the forums here, but for the most part I try and avoid those while at home. For the same reason I almost never upload images – it just takes too excruciatingly long. I’ve hung out on places like photo.net for years and I think I’ve posted maybe two images in all that time.

The other point I’ll offer is that a great many of the images offered up for perusal on the public internet are oftentimes less than stellar. One of the things I like about this particular forum is that that is much less of an issue – the quality of both the dialog and the photography here is higher than on most public sites. (That includes you, Vlad – I like many of the images on your web site). But in consideration of that sensitivity to quality, I can’t say that, even if I had a decent internet connection, I would ever purport to offer a lot of images for public review, as I simply don’t think I take enough that are of sufficient strength to warrant that. Like many avid amateur photographers around the world, I love the art and craft of what this hobby provides, but have no illusions about my own particular talents.

In the relative handful of hours in which I’ve been able to shoot my new M8 (funny how, even with a brilliant new camera in hand, all that work and family stuff still seems to demand attention!) I certainly wouldn’t suggest that I’ve captured anything special. My hit rate over the years suggests that that will probably take a little while. But I’ve used rangefinders and SLR’s and DSLR’s long enough to very quickly know that this new camera brings a most propitious confluence of technologies. Leica has wrought something very lovely. And as Manolo said, the combination is magical.

But just to prove that I do at least own the camera – I’ll make an exception to my usual practice and offer up this one poor example. Then I’ll go back to my normal “mostly lurking” mode and enjoy the fine work of the many photographers here who truly do know what they’re doing. Yourself included.

All the best,

Jeff
