dannirr Posted January 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I know there is a long backlog of M8 orders, and no-one really knows when orders will be filled. I have had one on order for 4 months now with no sign of getting it anytime soon - yet I read here of people getting one within a few days, or some having multiple cameras (when surely they initially only ordered one?). So, where are they (you?) getting the camera? Any help in getting a camera is appreciated. Same goes for a D-Lux 3 which I also want. Danni
Advertisement Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Hi dannirr, Take a look here M8 availability. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
arthury Posted January 16, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2007 Like I have told everyone else, in the US, you should call around in your local stores and ask if anyone has it. That's how I got mine. I called around and I got mine on the same day, If a store does not have one, ask if they know of store that has it. Atlanta is a rather large city, I am pretty sure there's a store that has it.
dannirr Posted January 16, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted January 16, 2007 I have tried that - with no success. Atlanta has only one Leica dealer (official) - they have none. I have tried calling around the country with no luck, incl Canada. Thanks, Danni
jamriman Posted January 16, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 16, 2007 You should be able to pick up a silver one. B & H had some in recently. Black ones are scarse. I bought a first batch black one, knowing I had to send it back to Solms. Try Tony Rose, popflash.
jcbjr Posted January 16, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 16, 2007 my suggesion is to keep a close eye on large (and good) web retailers such as b&h. they get pretty frequent stock and their treat customers well. i got my first from a very good local dealer, then bought a backup this weekend from b&h (so that i can return original without being m8-less!). best thing to do is register your information, then check frequently early in the morning. the problem with many smaller dealers is that they have more demand than supply, and take care of their known customers (appropriately) first. web retailers are more democratic, in a sense, and everyone has equal chance. i have seen stock pop up now and then and posted for other forum members, and others do the same, so also keep an eye on the forum. oh- and if you hear of stock at b&h, use their ad on this forum to purchase as it helps support forum costs. good luck. john

Artichoke Posted January 16, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 16, 2007 may have to do with the sorry state of the dollar against the Euro the price has not changed since it was announced back in October, but the dollar has weakened during this period I suspect the folks at Solms have been busy with upgrades/reworking the camera as well, which has caused a delay I suspect in the next few weeks more cameras will be available, but they may trickle into the US market
gesper Posted January 16, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 16, 2007 I got both my D-Lux 3 (October 18) and my M8 (November 10) by watching B&H until they showed in stock and jumping on it.
woodyspedden Posted January 16, 2007 Share #12 Posted January 16, 2007 I got both my D-Lux 3 (October 18) and my M8 (November 10) by watching B&H until they showed in stock and jumping on it. I could also suggest you contact David Farkas at Dale Laboratories in Hollywood Florida. (http://www.dalelabs.com). He is a superb dealer who will help if he can. Please give him my name as a referral. It may help as I have purchased much M Lenses and DMR and R lenses as well. I also understand that Tony Rose at Popflash Photo is a great dealer. (http://www.popflashphoto.com). Almost all the dealers have waiting lists and are hoping to get more than their fair share of M8'S to relieve the backlog. It is worth looking to as many dealers as you can to improve your chances. While B&H photo may get more bodies, they also have more backlog as a result of the pre-eminence in the market. ho_co Posted January 16, 2007 Share #13 Posted January 16, 2007 Consider Leica bei Meister and Adorama, also clicking through their banner ads on this forum. Consider Amazon.com. Consider back-ordering the camera from any of the larger shops mentioned in this thread. The major dealers will get a few cameras on just about every shipment. Cameras for smaller outlets will likely be parceled out from among the remaining units once a few have gone to the largest dealers. Before ordering it elsewhere, be sure you can get out of any commitment you made when you initially ordered the camera, and then hit the phone. And good luck! tashley Posted January 16, 2007 Share #15 Posted January 16, 2007 There's a brand new, second hardware version, (chrome) for sale on eBay at currently 4010 Euros bid, which is slightly under the UK price. The auction ends in two days and the French seller will ship anywhere. I got outbid last night and decided not to bid further since my own should now be back from Solms soon-ish... bloomy20 Posted January 16, 2007 Share #16 Posted January 16, 2007 Well down here in Melbourne, i ordered mine on December 18th from a very helpful store called photolab. They are a leica dealer and Frank was very helpful. I received a chrome M8 on Dec 27th. Bearing in mind there are 2 days of public holidays between thats quick i think. The price was 6490 Aus $. This equates pretty well with US prices i believe. Then if you are an overseas citizen you can claim back 1/11th at the airport ie approx 590 Aus$. So maybe shoot an email to frank on photolab.com.au, see what he can do and have a trip to the lovely city of melbourne watch some Aus open tennis, get a camera and go home all for not much more than getting one in the USA. michael
scott kirkpatrick Posted January 16, 2007 Share #17 Posted January 16, 2007 While B&H photo may get more bodies, they also have more backlog as a result of the pre-eminence in the market. B&H doesn't maintain any waiting list. Check several past threads with B&H in their titles for how to tell when new stock is coming in. However, you must be quick. Last weekend they announced stock availability just before closing their order-taking service for the day, and when they reopened the remaining stock disappeared in less than a minute! Next time this happens, the flash crowd will have to camp on the site before the weekend. scott
