marknorton Posted January 15, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I posted earlier that, compared to my first production camera, the power switch detents on my second M8 were much improved as was the release action. Still a little gritty but a more pronounced second pressure point and more positive release. Leica have now come back to me to tell me the update is automatic when your camera goes back for the streaking fix. Good news, the power switch in particular is a big improvement. jaapv Posted January 15, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 15, 2007 Good to know, Mark If it really is so on the one the are working on now, my 2nd generation goes off to Solms for the same.
marknorton Posted January 15, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted January 15, 2007 Not clear when the change was introduced, but you'll be able to compare the two, I'll be interested in your comments, it was immediately noticeable to me (but then I'm like that). Heidi S Posted January 15, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2007 Mark, I just got my first production run M8 back from Sohms, from doing the upgrade, and one of the first things I noticed what what you mentioned in your post. It is a vast improvement. Heidi
mike prevette Posted January 15, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 15, 2007 Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true, Please be true! Can you guys describe the feel of the new shutter press? I know that is a fairly hard thing to do, but the current one is killing me. I shoot a lot at night, hand held 1/30th-1/4 is not uncommon for me. The shutter pull is currently so heavy to get through to the final exposure trigger that I'm getting a lot of vibration from the actual press. I can feel the camera wiggle as the shutter button comes crashing down. It feels more like a pentax67 than my M6. I have tried everything, soft releases, slow steady shutter pulls that haven't failed me in years are all of a sudden earth shattering collapses of the button. Please tell me it's better now. _mike
Heidi S Posted January 15, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 15, 2007 Mike, It's better now. Before it felt real gritty to me, and maybe a bit sloppy when pressing it down. It was hard to tell where the first stop on the shutter release was, for me anyway. Now, it still isn't quite as smooth as my M7, but there is a no question where the first stop on the shutter release is. It feels like it was tightened up and smoothed out with the 1/2 pressed position much more apparent. The shutter button was one of the reasons I thought about selling the M8 when I first got it. I was used to the smooth release of the M7. It still isn't like the M7, but much, much better, imho. Hope that helps. Heidi
marknorton Posted January 15, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted January 15, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks Heidi, I'm pleased it wasn't in my imagination! My first camera hadn't already gone to Solms by the time the second arrived. It's also good to hear a fixed camera has come back with it fixed. The travel to the first stop is quite short - to exit menus. The second stop seems more defined now, it's clearer when you get there and the release point is easy to discern beyond that. The grittiness is now mostly when you release the button back from the second position to the first. It's not perfect, but it's much better.
cnguyen Posted January 15, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2007 Didn't know there's a power switch update. I have the v1.0.9 and I agree with your findings. The shutter release has two distincts steps.
Heidi S Posted January 15, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 15, 2007 Mark, I'm glad it wasn't just my imagination either. lol It's kind of subtle improvement. Heidi
