Overgaard Posted October 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) LFi just today launched their magazine on the iPad and seen to be offering future subscription on either printed or iPad version (which I think will create some headache because you want the printed version for file and want to be able to read it on the go on your iPad: They should do a subscription that allow both a printed and an iPad version) You have to download the software, then inside that the "download current issue." I had a few problems first time, second time it worked flawless. Quite different (better) to view the images on a screen than on print. It's an interesting eye-opener to see the images in screen colors. Advertisement Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Hi Overgaard, Take a look here The actual LFI magazine on iPad (free beta). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

d2mini Posted October 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 22, 2010 Why is it better to see the magazine on a screen, than on paper? Is the print dead? Images tend to look better when they are backlit on a computer screen. Hence the common disappointment when finally printing the image.
Overgaard Posted October 22, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted October 22, 2010 Images tend to look better when they are backlit on a computer screen. Hence the common disappointment when finally printing the image. It's just different, also the backlit as said. I've read the magazine three times without actually reading it, and seeing it on the iPad made me check if it was actually the same because it felt more fresh and new. All in all it's interesting. I had the latest Vanity Fair both in print and on iPad, and it was the iPad version I read because I could do so in planes and restaurants. But I like to receive the print and have the overview of the whole thing. Print is alive, LFI will have to offer a package for 150% of the price of the mag subscription or something. Some of the stuff can also be made different in the iPad verion (videos, 3D animations, links to ads, etc). Different qualities.
tonyNZ Posted October 22, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 22, 2010 Has anyone downloaded this app. It is a beta version and they have included the July issue free. As a new Leica owner I was interested to have a look as I have not yet received their mags. They encourage response. I have had a quick look and think that they have not utilized the format to their best advantage. Take a look at the new yorker and wired to see good conversions of mags to the iPad. I think I would prefer a hard copy, but it would be great to have an electronic version to scan through. Maybe wevcould co-ordinate a response from this forum? rosuna Posted October 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 22, 2010 Is the price of a printed LFI issue the same of the .epub version? The cost of the printed version is higher so I would expect a lower price for the file-only purchase. In my opinion the printed version should include an access to files (no additional costs for LFI). If you buy a separate item, you should have the choice. stunsworth Posted October 22, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why is it better to see the magazine on a screen, than on paper? Is the print dead? It depends on the cost as well. For example, you can get a full year of Amateur Photographer for the Zinio app for £25 or so - that's around 50p a copy. schmolinski Posted October 22, 2010 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2010 I downloaded it. Since I bought the printed version and the iPad version I can compare and say the following. The digital version is not a substitute for me. I very much enjoy Sunday mornings with my print version of the LFI at breakfast. On the other hand a digital LFI is nice to have when I am on the road or traveling. Though, the LFI Galery is quite nice. It really enjoy getting inspired by the almost nice shots provided there. Both together is a appreciable combo. I would say for subscriptioners it would be nice to have. Technicaly I can't say what's god or bad since I did have had bad experiences with the ap. Ya, i mentioned in another thread that I was recently in a doctor's waiting room and I was reading my own dang magazines on my ipad rather than being forced to read an old icky copy of Better Homes and Garden or People from 6 months ago. Very cool. Except i had to be more careful of watchful eyes while I was flipping through my digital copy of Maxim.
BRJR Posted October 23, 2010 Share #10 Posted October 23, 2010 I received email notification about this from LFI today (22 Oct. 2010) and, as I already have the LFI app. loaded on my iPad, downloaded the iPad version of the LFI Magazine and found I prefer the iPad version to the hard copy issue. It obviously needs some more features added, such as permitting us to book-mark where we last left off when reading the magazine ----but, likely that sort of thing will be provided by the time this project is implemented for full use. Should also have a system of archiving past issues and a way of searching through any or all of them.
efftee Posted October 24, 2010 Share #11 Posted October 24, 2010 I had the LFI app for a while and the current issue was available for download before 22 Oct. I think it's great! Being able to read the digital edition any time anywhere with the hardcopy in my library; it's like having my cake and eating it too. I certainly hope LFI would continue to make the digital edition available for free, or at the least without further charge to their print subscribers. pleeson Posted October 24, 2010 Share #12 Posted October 24, 2010 Pretty cool to have all your magazines and books in one place. I suspect that print magazines will soon go the way of film cameras. The money and paper saved will make electronic distribution the norm. College textbooks soon to follow. And PC-based tablets are coming soon.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted October 24, 2010 Share #13 Posted October 24, 2010 Love reading magazines on the iPad, but can't envision not having a hardcopy also. My real problem with the LFI for iPad is why must they work out a separate app when there are great well functioning apps like Zinio.. come on LFI, don't reinvent the wheel. . Guest WPalank Posted October 24, 2010 Share #15 Posted October 24, 2010 FYI, the App came out with an update last night. Something about fixing the bugginess of downloading the magazine. I know Steve, myself and a couple others had to make two attempts for it to work. I'd be interested t know if there is any true improvement in this regard. ianman Posted November 3, 2010 Share #19 Posted November 3, 2010 They wanted to offer both the magazine and the gallery within the same app and none of the existing solutions did provide that functionality. What does this mean exactly ? Are they using an off-the-shelf template for the application or are they building it from scratch ? Ian
stunsworth Posted November 3, 2010 Share #20 Posted November 3, 2010 Ian, they had their existing iPhone/iPad app. They could have sold the magazine through the Zinio app, but decided to keep the mag and gallery in the same app.
