Hi Skimmel

Yes, Sandisk cards are usually very reliable. However, there are reports in the forum that M8 cannot recognise Sandisk 4GB cards at the present moment.

I use a Ridata 4GB card, M8 recogonise the whole 4GB and it works fine. It's been reported Transcend 4GB card also works fine, though both are not labelled SDHC.

Don't ask me why 4GB cards are not automatically SDHC. This has already been discussed to death in previous SD threads in Nov & Dec. Do a search and you will know the peciliar story.

Hi Arthur

For your question, the answer is practically NO. There are numerous reports that M8 cannot recognise a 4GB SDHC card at the present time. Not even a single successful case AFAIK and searches in this forum. Maybe a later M8 firmware can due with it at a later time. Leica have already lots of bugs to fix in their present agenda.

In the present mixed and stirred SD formats, class 2, 4, 6, SDHC and manufacturers' non-compliance on their SD 'standards', (though my Ridata 4GB x150 works fine with M8 at a modest price, the Epson P5000 media storage player just doesn't recognise it!) I would highly suggest Scandisk Extreme III 2GB SD until all dust on standards and firmwares settle down, my 2 cents.

Cheers

Matthew

Thanks Matthew. I noticed that the Sandisk Extreme III 1 GB, but not 2 GB, card is on the Leica official list. But, Ultra II 2 GB and Sandisk (no model) 2 GB are. I wonder why.

For those looking for something slightly more refined to use in their coddled M8s, I recommend the Panasonic PRO HIGH SPEED SD cards.

I knew I wouldn´t be able to stand being greeted by the "Made in China" glaring at me from the SD card every time I remove my beautifully milled bottomplate, so I opted for these gems. A sedately engraved "Made in Japan" is much less offensive down there...

No problem with my 2G Transcend 150X cards. I use both a Transcend Portable Multi-Card Reader and the Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 card reader because

1) I also need to read CF cards from DSLRs.

2) I had left the Transcend reader at home and had to buy another one during a recent Asian trip

Both readers work OK.

Jaap,

do you think the difference in speed between the two cards is noticable on the M8?

I don't notice, but frankly, I did't check. For my normal style of shooting those few microseconds don't make any difference.

Thanks. Are these faster in the M8 -- that is, do they do the 20 mb/sec rate or the 10 mb/sec rate?

Sandisk 1GB Ultra-II Plus USB and 2GB Extreme III with no problems here. Also used a 512MB Sandisk plain (the blue ones) that I had in a Palm, and it worked very slow but OK.

Panasonic 4GB SDHC Class 2 DOES NOT work. Purchased the card from a Leica dealer, who subsequently asked Leica about it and received the answer that Firmware 1.10 would deal with the problem.

SanDisc Extreme III 1.0 GB and 2.0 both work. I'm wondering, whether I should exchange the Panasonic card for 2x2 SanDisc III's

I use the SD Extreme III 2GB without any problems and other have the same experience. (knock on wood).

I suggest you exchange your cards, besides 4GB is a bit of a risc when your data is lost.
