"no one is shooting film now why you shoot film?" Man... i am just looking to buy BW film and it is soooo hard to find... Thank you.. just a thought
Advertisement Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Hi decay2000, Take a look here Why is it so hard to find BW films here.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
aesop Posted October 13, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2010 ...nothing new there - it is just a stark lesson in economics. From your input, I would recommend buying online. The assumption here is that you have already figured out how the film will be processed.
earleygallery Posted October 13, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 13, 2010 Buy online, buy bulk and save money, store it in your freezer, process yourself.
Xmas Posted October 13, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 13, 2010 Hi It is no longer a commodity item so you need to order by telephone and have posted, or collect when in larger town. You can go to bulk film and IXMOO cassettes, load and develope your own, all easy to do and cuts your per frasme costs considerably. Buy cine reels of 5552 (Double-x) Double-x works really well with AgBr paper and enlarger. Hr.O.Barnack had to do all these things in the 20s before the cassette was commercialized, lieder hosen optional. Noel .

Xmas Posted October 13, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 13, 2010 Hi Most of my equipment I was given by people converting to DSLR, try camera clubs. Most people want to give kt to a good home where they will be used, Mean types will want real money for their Leitz enlarger, just go for tanks, thermometer, measurng flask etc first. But if you are offered a Leitz enlarger cheap bargain... If you are only developing film then you only need a dry darkroom any large cupboard off a corridor with few windows is easy to convert, make light tight. The advantage of even a cramped cupboard is considerable over a changing bag. Having loaded a tank you them relocate to kitchen or bath room with running water. You can refill the cupboard when you fnish, fot the day. The double-x is nice film has a cult following. Noel

Thank you all.... ...not just processing - you might as well start seriously contemplating purchasing a decent enlarger now. Processing and printing at home makes sense. christer Posted October 14, 2010 Share #11 Posted October 14, 2010 For the occasional film buyer product availability may have deteriorated, but not for me. I have used mail order to get film and paper almost since I started doing my own b+w developing and printing in the 50s. Wider selection, much better prices, fresh stock and more convenient (if you are able to plan your requirements for the next six months).
tobey bilek Posted October 14, 2010 Share #12 Posted October 14, 2010 I can`t find stone axes and buggy wheels anymore either. Retail stocks what people buy. Scans can be converted to monochrome nicely and processed to mimic proper grain size and grain sharpness of any film with the grain rolling off in highlights/shadows areas, contrast curve added, You will never see the difference. B&H and Adorama ship world wide and are honest dealers. Buy a bulk supply once a year and avoid shipping in the warmest months. I buy 100 foot rolls only. The reuseable brass Leica Cassets are the only way I feed my Leicas and I never see a scratch.
Karreaux Posted October 14, 2010 Share #13 Posted October 14, 2010 It gets harder everyday to get film. Like Neopan1600, it's just A SHAME they stopped the production. As long I have Tri-X400, things are +- OK, but when I can't buy anymore of that I'll go NUTS....
Xmas Posted October 14, 2010 Share #14 Posted October 14, 2010 Hi Toby If you want silver gelatin prints, then scanning C41 color, photoshopping it,... and... seems a long way around. I did not know any one still did C41 color in 100 foot cans, I know you can still get cine color in cans? Is the C41 100 foot cheaper than 100 foot of monochrome? AlanG Posted October 14, 2010 Share #17 Posted October 14, 2010 Apparently the word on the resurgence of film use hasn't reached these dealers yet.
adan Posted October 14, 2010 Share #18 Posted October 14, 2010 I'm no pollyanna regarding future availability of all kinds of film, but beware of internet rumors. 1. Dealers may stop carrying a film, and rather than take the heat themselves, blame it on the film maker. In some cultures (I name no names) a lie is seen as less unseemly than a confrontation. 2. A film maker may drop a packaging option - e.g., bulk rolls or single rolls, or 5-packs or 120 or 4x5 - without necessarily dropping the entire emulsion. 3. A film maker may drop a film in a given market/country/region while still making it available in other places where sales are better. 4. A film make may make several emulsions with similar names - e.g. "Fuji 1600" may refer to either Superia 1600 or Natura 1600 or Neopan 1600. 4a. Alway keep in mind that most people go through life with blinders on - so if they only use Superia 1600 and have no clue that 1600 Neopan exists, they may well be told that Superia 1600 has been discontinued (which it has, in the US) and babble that "Fuji 1600" has been discontinued, thinking "their" film was the one and only... Equally, if they only ever use 5-packs, and are told those are no longer available, they may ASSUME the whole emulsion is discontinued. (Thought to live by: "Assume" makes an ASS of U and ME. Avoid doing this.) My local dealer stopped carrying Fuji 800Z - they were very up-front that THEY were not carrying it because too many rolls ended up in the out-of-date box and the price had gone up to $14.95 a roll, so they could not afford the waste. They did not claim Fuji had dropped it. But some dealers might have said otherwise. Neopan 1600, btw, is still listed on the FujiUSA website as a current film. I will check with my dealer today to see what they know (since they are trustworthy).
AlanG Posted October 14, 2010 Share #19 Posted October 14, 2010 Neopan 1600, btw, is still listed on the FujiUSA website as a current film. I will check with my dealer today to see what they know (since they are trustworthy). Yes, it is confusing. For instance the Fujifilm site still lists 64T, but B&H shows all but 4x5 Quickload 64T as discontinued. Adorama also only shows Quickload. So this may be what is happening with some other films too and the dealer may actually have the latest information. This is what B&H shows for Fuji Neopan: (1600 discontinued and 100 Acros in 35mm and 4x5 as the only Fuji b/w in stock.) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Fuji+Neopan&N=0&InitialSearch=yes Uniquephoto still lists Neopan 1600. earleygallery Posted October 17, 2010 Share #20 Posted October 17, 2010 Fuji's website lists Neopan 1600 as a current film, and it's available via their online store in the UK http://www.fujilab.co.uk/catalog/film-c-30.html
