delander † Posted October 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Photography of Edwin Smith by Robert Elwell. Actually published 2007 but I've just discovered it.Smith died in 1971 and was described by John Betjeman as 'a genius at photography'. His photographs have illustrated a lot of books many written by his wife Olive Cook about architecture, interiors, landscape. I'm not sure he used a Leica but does that matter? Stunningly produced largish hardback book, with three author's essays on 'Discovering Photography' 'Discovering Britain' and 'Discovering Abroad'. Generally speaking the images here are more dreamy with wonderful light and tones as opposed to 'gritty'. Wonderful duotones, cant stop looking at them. Such a relief from the modern style of yet another oversaturated dawn or twilight landscape. Great photo of Whitby, so different to those taken by Joe Cornish. B&W has so much to offer!
