28 Summicron - Size vs. 35 Lux ASPH?

i don't think the Zeiss hood can be mounted on Leica? i will be more interested to know if anyone has tested to see if the modern coating is good enough that the hood can be dispensed with.

the 50 asph summilux is certainly good enough even without the hood.

the hood thing, it increases the bulk and intrude into viewfinder.

the zeiss fits, but you have to use same tape between the hood and lens mount. for a perfect view, consider the zeiss viewfinder, which has both 25mm and 28mm framelines.

As you can see from the shots I posted in this thread: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/12611-alternate-35mm-1-4-lux-hood.html

I'm using a Heavystar wide angle hood on my 35 'lux. It blocks much less of the VF than the original. If you can use Leica's 35'lux hood on the 38 'cron you shuld be able to use this one too.

Thanks for your prompt demo on the Zeiss hood! By your experience, what tape are you using and as it is not screwed or clipped, will it be easily get loosen and lost by accident?

For the 50 asph, I totally agree with you as I have not use any hood since day 1 and have not discover any flare issue.

Cheers

I don't use the hood on the 28 summicron, the zeiss hood is there for fun really. I prefer to use UV filter instead. If I don't use filter, then I think the hood is a good idea for protection. The current hood for Noctilux and Summilux asph would suggest that Leica thinks hood is really not that necessary.

The 28 Summicron and 35 Summilux are pretty much the same diameter and the 28 is 6mm shorter than the 35. It is the 28's hood which spoils things though.

It's those huge rectangular hoods that spoil the pocketability of the Leica concept, in general. For off axis veiling flare that hoods help control, a small round hood works almost as well. And you can get them on Ebay for $10 or so.

Another reason to use a hood is to protect that damn IR filter that us M8 users are saddled with.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. To close the loop... after a heartfelt cringe at the prospect of dropping 8K in the span of 2 weeks - I'm not a rich guy, by any means - I went ahead and placed an order with Tony Rose for a 28 Summicron ASPH. It'll be a few weeks, as he doesn't have one in stock, but I'm very much looking forward to it.

Thanks for the help in sorting it out...

Well that is exactly what i have now is the round hoods for the 35 lux and the 28 cron. Just installed it when i got home and looks very promising. i will take a few shots to show this and also were the Leica hood would be. So far i can see a lot more on the frame line. need to check if it vignetts though

Congratulations Jeff, I've no doubt you will enjoy the 28mm Summicron and I'm going to be interested to see Guy's lens hoods.
