jaapv Posted September 20, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that we have lost for instance John Stovall and Philippe Debray, I wonder if it would be a good idea to have an "in memoriam" section. There threads could be posted with links to images and post of members that died, otherwise they will simply disappear from the forum over the months. Advertisement Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Hi jaapv, Take a look here Members that passed away. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
luigi bertolotti Posted September 20, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 20, 2010 I felt sad to read of John and Philippe... even with no personal contacts, a forum like this gives you the feeling to really KNOW the people who partecipates, discuss... and any image posted brings with it something of the person who made it; hopefully, any people who passes away leaves something of his own on the persons who were next to him/her: for us this legacy is, above all, their pictures: so I endorse by heart the proposal of keeping something of them hereby : maybe, simply a "in memoriam" section in the Photo Forum, with an initial, short and simple, biography, and a number of pictures from them; I wonder how this could be feasible (searching past pics from them in the forum ? Asking to friends of them some detail on their life ?). But, anyway, this is an opinion from me... I could understand if someone else wouldn't like to see such a section... or think it would be a section bound to neglection... It's sad to see forum members die... only remark is that is unavoidable... we are a group of around 10.000 "active members"... cold statiscs say that in such a group, any year, some deadly event is very probable... . jaapv Posted September 20, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted September 20, 2010 Maybe their gallery ( if there is one) could be made permanent,in a special section, as obviously it would disappear as their sponsorship runs out. the Internet is a young medium, so this is something that has not been fully thought through, but as Luigi says, statistics are relentless, and the Leica demographic is biased to somewhat more mature participants here. aesop Posted September 20, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 20, 2010 ...okay, here's my opinion: I would have thought that a forum member's passing was a deeply personal matter, to be shared in private by those who really had a relationship with the departed. Similarly, I have misgivings about making a public "thing" of a member's passing, or seeking to immortalise the member (irrespective of stature within the forum) as a direct consequence of their passing. People come and go - our time will come, and when it does, friends and family will celebrate our lives and contributions as people/photographers (accordingly, and with dignity). For those whose contributions already live in the public domain (on personal, permanent, web-based vehicles created expressly for that purpose), the contributions should continue serve as a constant reminder of their creators. So, by all means, remember the departed, but please, not in the form of a permanent fixture or section on a vibrant forward-looking public forum with tens of thousands of globally-spread members. As I said, IMO.
andybarton Posted September 20, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 20, 2010 I have often wondered how people know when "virtual" friends die. Obviously, one is not in a position to make the news public oneself, so the reliance is made on others doing it on one's behalf. I seriously doubt that anyone in my family would think about such a thing.
jaapv Posted September 20, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted September 20, 2010 That is one of the nice things about this forum, Andy. Many members know a number of other members personally, if only through member meetings.

azzo Posted September 22, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 22, 2010 There was another member who had passed away even before these two gentlemen mentioned above. Can't remember his name, but Pete (elansprint) mentioned him a couple of times I had come across.

Rolo Posted September 22, 2010 Share #13 Posted September 22, 2010 No. A Brit, if I'm not mistaken. You're not thinking of me ? It was just wishful thinking on Pete's part. I'd rather you write about me whilst I can still read it, if that's OK ? p.s. I bought Andy the best coffee in the house yesterday. And he was late, again ! abrewer Posted October 30, 2010 Share #18 Posted October 30, 2010 Renato from Italy? Was he the doctor who had all the great portraits? Some of the women he photographed were striking. He had a great style and I enjoyed his photos and his posts. They were often very passionate, occasionally profane.
wlaidlaw Posted October 30, 2010 Share #19 Posted October 30, 2010 I noticed this photograph a couple of days ago as it cycled through my screen saver. Philippe Debray, who died in May of this year. This photo taken after a very good lunch at La Mère Germaine in Villefranche sur Mer in 2008. I think an "in memoriam" section is an excellent idea - thank you Jaap. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor!
