I thought about that a Summicron 28mm asph. would be a good lense for my M8 (as first lens i have 50mm). But now i am thinking about if not the 24mm would give a more intersting view. 24mm @ M8= 32mm but 28mm@ M8 = 37mm

Olof,

The best thing you can do before buying is play with the frameline selector when your out shooting.

The 24/35 frames will give you an idea what the field of view is for the 24mm, as will the 28/90 frame for the 28mm. It may be a case of just playing with the selector on shots you can't take with the 50mm and see which lens would have taken the picture with ease.

My own feeling having the 35'lux was neither the 28 or 24 were really wide enough with the 1.33 crop and I went for a 21mm. So in reality what I see looking normaly through the viewfinder I get on the picture.

Of course the 28'cron is a whole stop faster.......but is only available in black:p while the 24 & 21 are available in chrome;) (I refer to your other post)

That's a great suggestion. Just walking around without even making pictures, just playing with the different views in the finder, could be quite useful.

Cheers,

Not any more, only if you buy secondhand...

If you look hard enough on the net you'll still find them on the shelf, SHPhoto has a new (demo) 21 and there are a few retailers in the UK have the 24.:p

I found a couple of other places in europe that had them new as well, I just can't remember where. France I think!.

There is nothing more satisfying then finding a spotless 2nd hand example at 65-70% of the normal retail. It's quite a saving to be made.:D

With a new M8 recently I had a similar choice. I chose...

The 28/2.0, the 35/1.4, and the 75/2.0. I had an older 50/1.4 and I am looking to buy the Tri-16/18/21 with the Leica lens rebate if the true price in the US is 30% off list. Ultimately I want the 50/1.0 noctilux.

Both lenses are great, even if the Summicron is slightly more great considering it's a f/2 lens.

It all depends on the focal lenght.

I prefer the 28mm on the M8 (indeed I just sold my 24 asph) but I have also the 21 asph and 15 CV.

If you have a 50mm and you are looking for only one wide lens, IMO the 24 is the best option.

Jan, based on images from all the wide Leica lenses that were in reviews on Sean Reid's site, I purchased a used 24mm f2.8 asph lens. Puts also raves about this particular lens, saying it is the single most important lens an M-owner should have.

I find it superb.

I also do a lot of stage shooting and was making a lot of use of my 35mm f1.4 asph lens, using film. Over the past 2.9 years of using the D2, I also used the 28mm setting for this work.

So, I opted for slightly wider.

What I REALLY want, however is an f1.4 lens in this 21mm to 28mm range. I just used the 24mm in a shoot of a dance concert, and I had to shoot at iso 2500. If I had been able to use my 24mm lens, I could have shot at iso 650 and wouldn't have had to deal with quite as much noise.

Can you try the various lenses at a dealer who has used ones?

With my M8...

I have the old tri-Elmar for daylight shootings. My 21mm Elmarit for wide shots , the 35mm f1.4 ASPH for low light , 50mm f2 and f1.4 for M6TTL, 75mm f1.4 for low light, 90mm f2.8 and 135mm Hektor for long shots, Visoflex closeups , etc...

I have to keep everything since I still have my "full frame" M6 TTL and who knows when M9 comes down the pike with full frame.

Also recently acquired a 50mm f2 Summitar LTM, 50mm f1.8 Canon LTM and 135mm f4 Serenar just for kicks.
