then go on adn e-mail your wishes to Leica. My dealer told me, that if there only would be enough potential buyers, there would really be a chance to get what we want. Their production Lot is each time about 500 pcs..... so come on and send your e-mail, not only today...also tomorrow, next week, next month...

I want a chrome........:D :D Noctilux:D :D

I could not understand why they made the Summicron 90 Apo Asph in chrome but only made the 75 Apo Asph in black. Perhaps it's because they are phasing them out.

Perhaps it is because they sell less? The chrome lenses are much heavier. As an example, the 50 Cron weighs 240g or 335g, black or chrome. That is a 40% increase.

So that's why the chrome lenses feel so much better! Those chintzy aluminum models feel like something from the soviet bloc.

Just kidding

That's funny, Rex :)

In my usual style of joking about serious matters, and taking kidding comments seriously, I have two things to say: Soviet stuff was low-tech, but not plastic! It was typically built to last centuries, but required adjustment all the time. Secondly, my 50mm Leica M lens (Lux Asph) is heavier than the 50 Cron R and both Canon 50s!

J. (is it John? I seem to recall I have seen that somewhere...),

I fully agree. Silver on silver is like a white t-shirt with white pants. I prefer blue jeans :)

An interesting place to visit in Sinsheim, Germany, is a fabulous air and transport museum where they have one of the now out-of-service Concordes and the Soviet copy, the Tupolev 144 - the Concordski.

You can climb into each and see equipment bays behind screens. The technology used in the Soviet version looks so old even compared to the Concorde and that is more than 30 years old. People who agreed to fly in the Concordski were True Heroes of the Motherland.

This picture has the tail of the TU-144 on the right loooking back at Concorde.

Sarcasm on....

Silver on silver becomes a bit to shiny for my taste .. beautiful but too much of an eye catcher

Silver on silver is like a white t-shirt with white pants

So what do you guys think about the glowing iridium red colour on the front of the lens, is that not more an eye catcher?.

....Sarcasm off.

It's a personal choice/taste thing. I prefer chrome on chrome after many years of black on black with red rings or big whites. I quite like the look of the 2 black lenses 50 & 75 I have on the chrome M8 but I prefer the more classic all silver look with my 21 & 35. If I change the 50 'cron for a 'lux it will be for a chrome one. As for white jeans and a t-shirt.....don't even go there.:p

I use to be black on black, but have turned into a chrome on chrome kind of guy. With a brown 1/2 case, I look like a tourist out of a 1950's movie. For whatever reason, it seems that this getup is ignored by more people than any other rig. I know it doesn't make any sense.

While I like silver chrome lenses I hope they don't come out with additional ones. I am very happy that lack of supply forces me to stick with my current lenses. I don't need the temptation...

Although the asthetic argument is the one most often quoted (black/black, chrome/chrome, and the two mixed), I find there are a couple of practical reasons for silver/silver.

First is the weight factor. I find the heavier chrome lens aids in steadying the camera at slow speeds. Secondly, the chrome lenses wear much better over time vis a vis the black. That should make the heirs happy after I'm gone.

Not being a pro who may find it necessary to lug 5/6 lenses all day, I can understand an aversion to silver lenses though.

Jan, if you want chrome lenses, hang on for awhile. Leitz halted production of chrome lenses in the late 60's/early 70's for a time. After a few years went by, chrome came back, albeit with a premium over black of a $100 or so per lens. Another few years and the dropped the premium. So now we've come full circle. If demand for chrome is made known to Leica, they'll produce them. This time however, I doubt if the premium over black will go away.

On a finish basis alone, lens for lens (not counting economies of scale) I'm certain silver (brass) lenses cost more.

Rex,

I was using my chrome M8 for a work-related photo shoot yesterday, and someone asked me why I was still shooting film. I explained that it was a digital camera, and his response was: "Oh, then that must be one of the first digital cameras." So the chrome M8 may truly be more stealth than the black.
