bebert Posted January 9, 2007 Share #1  Posted January 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just started to shoot with my new M8 (v. 1.09) in Venice with an old Summilux 50mm and a Summicron 35mm asph.  Below are some of my shoots converted in C1 Pro.  I still do not see the limits of this magical M (I had also with me a Nikon D200 with a Nikor 35mm 2.0 and my impression shared by others is that these pictures printed on A3+ with an Epson 4000 and using QTR Rip for B&W are fantastic without the digital touch experienced even with the D200).  I am still amazed. If I had had this digital M a couple of years ago...!  Bebert   Welcome, dear visitor! bayerische Posted January 9, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted January 9, 2007 Glad your happy, but it's just another camera. Your the one that's good.
carstenw Posted January 9, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted January 9, 2007 Andreas, with this opinion, I am sure you shoot with your cellphone The camera sets the base level of technical capability. The photographer can then realise this potential or not. The M8 sets it rather high, except for the magenta issue.
skimmel Posted January 9, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted January 9, 2007 I just have to say, these are gorgeous pictures! Glad you're enjoying the camera.
arthury Posted January 9, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted January 9, 2007 Glad you are happy with the M8 and I share your feelings ... I also grew up in Nikon. Â BTW, it's not a good comparison to use one of Nikon's weakest lenses (35mm/2 AF) as a comparison. How about compare it with the Nikkor 28mm/1.4AF that has a aspherical ground element? That will be closer to a Leica-class lens in terms of technical achievements and price.
wparsonsgisnet Posted January 9, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted January 9, 2007 Jean-Marc, these are beautiful shots. Glad you like the camera so much too.

tashley Posted January 9, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted January 9, 2007 Lord! are those gorgeous! Especially the first two and the third. Â Here's my theory: the M8 may or may not have a certain 'magic' to it's images (I think it does) but what does it for me is the way it makes me FEEL about taking pictures. THe magic is in the combination of me and my machine, which I have never felt with any other camera. And mine goes off for repairs tomorrow! Â Somebody please sell me a spare! I will travel, and I will pay! Â Tim
grober Posted January 9, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted January 9, 2007 Thanks for posting! I'm thinking the first shot is the church across from the train station in Venice. Â Makes me miss both that magical city AND my M8 which has been in Solms for repair this last month. Â -g
bayerische Posted January 9, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted January 9, 2007 "The magic" talk is due to your Leica blinded eyes guys! Â And no, I don't shoot with a cellphone My Nokia E61 don't even have a camera. Â I just tried to be polite. After all my brother can take better pictures with his Cellphone than with a high-end camera.
lct Posted January 9, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted January 9, 2007 All those pictures are superb. What is the lens? The bokeh of the 4th one makes me think of the 35/2 asph, am i wrong? Otherwise nice pics Jean-Marc, bravo mon cher!
bebert Posted January 9, 2007 Author Share #12  Posted January 9, 2007 Thank you for all your comments. Your reactions in particular Tim's one are exactly in line with the feelings I had all during this short trip in Venice for the New Year with my brand new M8 (and a Summicron 35mm Asph for pics #1, #2 and #5, an old Summilux 50mm for pic #4 and an Elmarit 90mm pre Asph for pic #3).  I have used an M6 for the last 15 years. But with the digital area, it became a hassle to continue with films (to find a good lab to have your films decently developed, the time to scan the negs, clean them, ...). At the end I just stopped shooting, dreaming for a digital M and waiting...  And now with the M8 (and its bugs including the magenta cast partially corrected with Jamie Roberts profiles), I literally rediscover the great pleasure of taking pictures with no limitation, no constraint.  How can I explain this joy of shooting in a church 1/14th of second, walking around on the Vaporeto, being one with my machine (so light, so discreet!), coming back to my hotel, put the card in the computer, make some adjustments on PS, and that's it!. Same, when I came back home: within 10 minutes I was able to print A3+ prints and hang them on the wall!  And as always, the same Leica touch... I do not know (I am not a professional and I am not an engineer either) where it comes from, but the colors rendered by the M8 are really more natural when printed than the one obtained by other high end DSLR I have seen. Just a feeling...  My answer to my wife's question (I hope you are happy with such a gift for Christmas?) was simply: "Leica gives us a new dream machine, and frankly, I do not see where are the limits of such a gear!"  Hopefully my wife loves photography and I know where my second order will land...!  Look at this two pictures : taken a couple of years ago with my M6 : it took me hours just to get the right scan and the right tones; so much frustration!  Welcome, dear visitor! fuchs Posted January 9, 2007 Share #15  Posted January 9, 2007 Jean Marc, your first Venice shot is, simply put, terrific. If I had to collect images for a book on that city's magic and mistery, I would almost certainly choose this one for the cover. bayerische Posted January 9, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted January 9, 2007 But that is what you want, Andreas, isn't it? Otherwise, why would you be here at all, posting Go ahead, do it! Â Arrgh:) I would have if my Leica dealer wouldn't have told me the waiting time is 1 year, which I think is BS anyway... Â Because of this I already bought a new 5D, I'm perfectly happy with it. Â I have the M6, remember:D
carstenw Posted January 9, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted January 9, 2007 (witch = Hexe... ) Â I also have a 5D and it is really fantastic. I do find it much too large and heavy though, which is why I am in the process of switching.

Thank you for showing these images  Ed Albesi  Jean Marc  Venice is one of the truly special places on earth, and you have captured this specialness as well as i have ever seen done. i expect the M8 helped you to achive this but, be serious, this is the work of a special image maker. My sincerest congratulations.....wonderful images.....I am truly taken. With all my camera gear i would love to take just one like your first image here. it would justify the immense investment I have made in equipment.  Woody Spedden Fort Collins, CO
wilfredo Posted January 10, 2007 Share #19  Posted January 10, 2007 Jean-Marc,  I especially enjoyed the first two shots. At first I was resistant to purchasing the M8 because of all the issues and I still think Leica could have done a much better job with the release of this camera, but I was sold on the images, especially the B&W images. I posted some from last weekend on the People picture forum: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/people/13198-called-serve.html  I can't remember when I've had so much fun with a camera, "das klein photo wunder"  Cheers, Wilfredo+ Benitez-Rivera Photography
