M8 wish list

If Leica is listening to us and taking notes about improvements to the M8 features, I would like the following:

1. Take away the silver bar at the top of the review screen. Please make it black with the numbers in white or pale yellow. The silver intrudes upon the image.

2. Put the iso setting in the top readout. Take away either or both the battery and images-remaining readouts that are there. I can live with these in the "Set" screen.

3. Allow the "Menu" screen to be ended with the shutter press, like the "Set" screen is.

4. Allow the items within the "Set" screen to be ended with the shutter press. This would eliminate a step when changing iso speed, for instance.

5. Allow one to use the camera when the bottom cover has been removed. Go ahead and give me the "hey, dummy" message, but let me operate the camera. I don't particularly want to take pictures this way, but when I'm reformatting 4 SD cards, as I did last nite, it's annnoying to have to keep removing and replacing the bottom cover.

6. Design an f1.4 wide angle lens!

"Hew you Gnomes of Solms!" Thanks for making the M8.

Add this to the wish list aswell...

"Sorry to post this "not so important" POLL but this function is hugely missed in the M8, (by me anyway), my Leica DMR back had this feature, and the only thing it does is allow you to view the DNG ONLY in B&W, a can't see why we should have to capture and use storage space for a useless "basic JPG" only for the B&W previews, and yes when i shoot B&W i really like to see a preview in B&W "on camera" this can't be very hard for Leica to implement in a later M8 fw update...

Please help me with this POLL only by saying, "YES", i would like this feature in my M8, and remember, this saves you memory, and probably also "in camera processing time" because the camera can skip the processing of the JPG's...)"

I've read about the black and white preview in another thread. Now, I haven't received my M8 yet. However, I tested one over New Years for a few days and here is the crazy thing. While I shot DNG only, if I set the color profile to B&W, the camera would show me a B&W preview after taking the picture even though only DNG was recorded. I found that to be a nifty little feature. I guess if you're saying that the new cameras don't do this and it was just a fluke with my demo (version 1.06), then I can at least tell it should easily be doable.

Agree with this. It's also annoying if you are taking test shots and want to quickly remove and replace the SD card a number of times in a short space of time.

The detector switch is a small plastic switch right by the battery. Wedging a small piece of cardboard in the square hole will defeat it if that is what you want.

Jeez. I even say the stupid button and ignored it.

That would solve the formatting problem but wouldn't help with Ian's problem.

Why would it not solve Ians' problem? With the switch defeated the camera operates normally with the bottom cover removed.

Edit

Yes, I see the point if the test shots require a tripod.

I would like to be able to enter the lens ID from the SET menu. Have a list of all lenses show in the MENU and allow the user to select their subset of owned lenses, then pressing SET and Select Lens would only show the subset of lenses the user has. This would streamline the process and reduce errors. I do not want to have all my lenses coded.

My bad, Chet. I was of course thinking that I would hold the button in with my finger while formating the SD cards. I forgot that the prescription was for a shim to hold the button in.

Superglue, anybody?

Wake up the camera by just pushing the play, set or menu button instead of first depressing the shutter button..... Show manually set shutter speeds in viewfinder....the shutter dial should stop at A so one can set it to automatic without looking......video out would have been nice.....in the set menu, the selection show stay on the chosen menu item until you switch the camera off. It currently switches back to ISO when the camera goes to sleep, by staying on a preset, one could, for example quickley change the EV setting knowing the menu is already on EV

I agree about shooting the camera with the bottom cover off.

I totally agree...

This SHOULD BE A MUST for Leica, after the "all of a sudden" need for IR/CUT filter's

and their advertisment that almost every lens with the M-mount should work flawlessly

with the M8...

Leica should look to Nikon D200 - D2X/s which has this feature with every focal length

from 6mm-4000mm, and all can say, this works great, and would probably solve all of

Leica's incompatibility issue's....

This thread should be renamed "The M8 Firmware Wish List" and should be sent to Solms after everyone's wishes is written down...

There aren't enough digits - only 3 7 segment digits plus the (I think) 5 segments making up the battery display. It's not a dot matrix.

Can it display 1.2K on top (for 1250 ISO)? I would like to see the top screen alternate between ISO and frames left at about 1/second. Although I have shot <1000 pix with my M8 I have already done a bunch at unintentionally high ISO as well as wrong WB. WB can be fixed in PP whereas one is stuck with ISO. BTW, this is my main error using the Nikon D70, which does not have a dedicated ISO display either. Too easy to do. Too easy to forget last settings. May be more of a problem for non-anal types like me (fail to verify previous settings each time camera is turned on)

I believe the Nikon manual coding is mainly to enable the TTL metering (& FL and max aperture exif data). I do not think it enables the vignetting and aberration correction one gets with a 'D' or 'G' type lens in Nikon Capture or NC NX, which is probably lens-dedicated (based on how well I have seen this work).
