Jaybob Posted September 2, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got back from a quick trip to Chicago and was pleasantly surprised to find this exhibit. Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century | The Art Institute of Chicago This was like church, well, except for that one woman who felt it necessary to speak with her friend at top volume about everything that happened to her over the weekend. I just pumped my brakes and let her roll on ahead through the exhibit. I am consistently amazed by his work. I had never seen his "Banker" series, and I saw a print there that was new to me, of a mother son reunion in New York at the end of World War II. Just amazing. If you find yourself in Chi-town, you should go. Just my opinion, Chicago itself, the perfect BIG city. My first visit, definitely not my last. Advertisement Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Hi Jaybob, Take a look here HCB in Chicago. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mooky Posted September 2, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 2, 2010 I plan on going. But I'd be remiss if I didn't say that Ch-town is far from perfect - intriguing perhaps from a visitors standpoint - but it needs major help. Great city to photograph from many, many angles - it's a gritty place, be careful where you go. I grew up 15 miles west of downtown - lived there for about 30 years. The Art Institute is a great place to fill your head and if you can, spend a couple of days there.
budrichard Posted September 3, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 3, 2010 I don't think there is major city in the US that doesn't need major help. I have worked in (LOOP) and around Chicago for almost 40 years. Yes there are places where I wouldn't advise anyone to go but its a lot better than many other major cities and the Art Institute and the Downtown Area are one of the reasons to go. The Lake Front is reminiscent of the Boston Commons or Central Park and regularly policed for visitor safety. I have yet to attend the exhibit but its on my calendar for a nice weekend with a trip to Greek Town or Chinatown for lunch or maybe Chief O'Neill's Welcome to Chief O'Neill's | Pub & Restaurant | Chicago for a Pint or two on the way home to Wisconsin.-Dick
Jaybob Posted September 3, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted September 3, 2010 As a first time visitor, I certainly didn't fully explore every nook and cranny. Chicago itself, is a very impressive BIG city. Photogenic as well. Perfection may have been overstating it.

I also really enjoy the Twin Cities, kind of reminded me of a smaller Chicago. Photographing in the Loop really has a lot to offer from a dynamic/angular perspective. pico Posted September 3, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 3, 2010 I don't think there is major city in the US that doesn't need major help. I have worked in (LOOP) and around Chicago for almost 40 years. I lived all over Chicago for years. Hyde Park (53rd & Harper), the Fullerton & Lincoln area, near Hull House (Buckingham St), Lincoln Ave, near Second City, and in an efficiency by the Hancock Building (awesome location). Of course the Daily News (then) & Sun Times and Tribune on Michigan. Chicago has gotten much better over the decades. I love that city. Were you around when O'Rourkes Pub existed? How about the Ale House? I know most of the people on the Ale House wall.
