If so do you like it & would you buy one again? What is the going rate for a clean lens? Thanks

thomasw_ Posted August 31, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 31, 2010 Does anyone have and use a Canon 50mm .95 lens on their Leica M camera. If so do you like it & would you buy one again? What is the going rate for a clean lens? Thanks Hi, 1. I had one in M-mount that had been converted. 2. I didn't care for its performance overall as it was too soft and mushy. As well the lens had a massive diameter, making the ergonomics lame. No, I wouldn't use or buy one again. I'd just rather save and buy a noctilux which is a better all round lens, especially at f1. 3. Check ebAy for completed sales or antiquecameras.net....I bet they sell for ~2 grand? menos I M6 Posted August 31, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 31, 2010 The Canon f1.2 has a better reputation, being derived also from the same lens formula. It has a very distinct, wild out of focus rendering wide open, which can be used artistically. As a special purpose lens, it seems (still) rather affordable also. If I would be after a fast, affordable 50, it would be either a CV Nokton or the Canon f1.2 LTM with LTM-M adaptor. I was long after a fast 50 (f1 or thereabouts) and ended with a f1 Noctilux after other solutions didn't show up or didn't satisfy. I love, what the Noctilux can do. treeplanter Posted August 31, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 31, 2010 A properly modified and calibrated Canon 50/0.95 can deliver surprisingly sharp images, even wide-open. The only downside is the lens huge size, this bugger is hard to hold. And some folks don't like the bokeh (I do). Would I do it again? Yes, with no hesitation. Here's a pic taken in May on Efke 25,processed in Rodinal. F0.95 at 1/1000 using a ND filter. Jim B.
bill Posted August 31, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 31, 2010 I have the 1.2 and love it. It is sharp, and gives pleasant OOF areas wide open. The front element is very pronounced; you have to be careful when fitting a front filter. Regards, Bill
spydrxx Posted September 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 2, 2010 I had one and had it calibrated to my M4 body. It was too soft wide open, but closed down a stop or two was just fine. Given its size, weight and softness, I sold it and got a Noctilux. Unfortunately my circumstances changed, and I rarely used the lens for a year, so finally sold it too. If you get a 0.85 needing conversion, I can highly recommend Ken Ruth at Photography on Bald Mtn. in California. He has done several and is quite competent. stephan_w Posted September 2, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had one and sold it. the softnes wide open is just to much. Maybe I was not patient enough to find some benefits......also, i found it very sensitive to flare. Beside that, it is a nice objet and for someone having time and devotion, it maybe a nice lens for testing and playing around
pico Posted September 3, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 3, 2010 I have had three Canon f/.95 lenses, but on the Canon 7s. Used them in the news business. Two had focus adjustment issues. One is good and I kept it. In a sense, it is faster than f/.95 because the softness throws light into shadow areas. Wish I could find one picture that was published - shot wide-open over Kodak 2475 recording film pushed to high-heavens in HC-110. Every possible technical ugliness was in that picture. drjho Posted September 6, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 6, 2010 I have one and use with my M8. It is hard to focus wide open but it can create some interesting images. Stopped down a bit it can be pretty sharp, not like my lux but acceptable. I posted one of each from a day out. Welcome, dear visitor!
