50mm f1.4 asph or non

Thanks to everyone for the discussions. I am leaning toward the asph version. Since I cannot keep several versions of the same lens, I will probably sell the non-asph. My photography is mostly outdoor landscapes which would mean a lot of stopped down near to far focus etc but I also like to shoot wide open and the asph version seems to have a slight edge there in my opinion. Thanks again to everyone, very useful discussions.

Carsten: Quoting from the M8 instruction manual -

"When using a lens without 6-bit coding, the recognition function of the camera must always be turned off, to prevent malfunctions."

Page 86, English language section.

Hi Andy,

I know that it says that but I've left the lens detection on many times with uncoded lenses and I haven't seen any ill effects yet.

Cheers,

Sean

obviously people can have different view of what is a smooth out of focus/bokeh.

here are three shots, from 1) rigid summicron, 2) pre-asph summilux, 3) summilux asph, look at the upper right hand corner.

I think I prefer the summilux asph better and the rigid least. of course in other application, the rigid might comes first.

Difficult to compare pictures with different fields of view and focus points IMHO.

Would be fine with a tripod and the same light, FoV, aperture and focus point like in my samples above.

I've also left the lens detection on enabled when using an uncoded lens and have not had any problems by leaving the lens detection on and switching between a coded 28 mm and uncoded 50 mm. I still have the original 1.06 firmware. I was not planning on getting my 50mm or 75mm lenses coded. Is the 1.09 or 1.10 firmware going to have a negative impact ? Sean, can you find out if this is a real issue or not? Thanks.

I can only see it being a problem if an uncoded lens triggers the lens detection accidentally. So far, I've never seen that happen. If there are other consequences, I haven't experienced them.

I'm not sure now.... I have both current 50mm f2 and f1.4 non-ASPH and after seeing your test pics I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading mine to 1.4 ASPH. I personally like two disticnt looks from the Cron and the Lux that I have. thanks for the test guys

Hi everyone,

While I still debate obtaining the M8, I continue to enjoy my D-Lux 2.

At the risk of sounding antagonistic, I just thought I would offer my humble opinion that as the owner of a 1993 M6 with Summilux-M 50mm f1.4 (PreASPH), I think that if anything, the pre-ASPH shot looks better in this test (with its limitations).

I prefer the critically sharp image of the aspheric version. The bokeh is not bad either, maybe not as nice as the pre-asph samples, but not too far off either.

I have a shot from the 50 asph wide open in a night club on Kodachrome 200. The image includes the whole band and the sound guy, quite a wide image. Off to the left, I can see the little lines that divide the increments on the graphic equalizer. That was shocking to me.

I have two Leica lenses, the only ones I will ever need, the 50 and the 28/2 aspherics. Sharpenss is 99% of the reason I even got into Leica.
