File names

Here's another undocumented (as far as I can tell) feature:

The default directory structure of a freshly-formated card is /DCIM/100LEICA. File names are "L100nnnn.dng", where "nnnn" is the picture number assigned by the camera. I assume that most people use continuous numbering to minimize the risk of overwriting files.

If you mount a freshly formated card in your reader and edit the LEICA folder's name on your computer, say to "200LEICA", the camera assings filenames in the form L200nnnn.dng. More interestingly, after the first exposure on the "200LEICA" card the body remembers the "200LEICA" and applies it in the future when it formats cards.

This lets you give each M8 its own 3-digit code, which minimizes the risk of overwriting files if you have two bodies or work with another photographer. When the frame counter rolls over at "9999" you can adopt a new 3 digit code to eliminate any risk of new files overwriting old files.
