Pickpocketed LX3 needs replacing

Unfortunately somebody managed to remove my LX3 from my coat pocket at a music festival on Friday. This means I'm in the market for a new compact. Anyone got any recommendations. I've been looking at the G11 but have read some impressive reviews of the Sony Nex (which seems to be a similar size to the D Lux 4/LX3). I want reasonable performance in a reasonably small package. I never found the fast lens on the LX3 to be any use in low light conditions so I'm happy to use my future camera with flash. I can't afford an X1...

Any ideas?

The sheer number of pedants policing this forum identifying mistakes/typos/minor banal errors like some kind of fundamentalist photographic Taliban engaged in a near constant pissing contest is staggering.

However, it's not all battle against photographic infidels (photfidels). During their quiet time, after days of studious examination of forums in search of errors and omissions; breaks with catechism and heretical pronouncements. They settle down to their 'me' time.

Brown trousers with waistband a few inches short of chest, a mustard polo shirt deftly tucked in, argyle socks gloriously resplendent in blue chunky slip ons. There they lie like madonnas in the morning light; half slumber, half dream. Light reflecting off their bald patch, as if by some divine intervention through their comb-over.

Spent after hours of ecstasy, they carefully, lovingly and slowly wipe their 'essence' off of some MTF charts. Panting, their glazed eyes look toward the forum blinking and beeping in the background, reassuring, a reminder of their jihad.

The self-satisfied half smile of the true believer splashed across their face. Happy in the knowledge that they are the true warriors engaged in God's own work.

Now, has anyone got a digital compact they'd like to recommend?

That's me, apart from the bald patch and comb-over. I don't care for your tone, so I'm not telling you what my recommendation is, other than to mind your manners.

Maybe it is just me, but as a non native English speaker I note that by saying

I never found the fast lens on the LX3 to be any use in low light conditions ...

he DOES acknowledge that the LX3 has a fast lens. He explains, however, that his new camera does not need to have a fast lens.

And to give at least some recommendation, how about the new Vlux 20?

Cheers,

Andy

Since your petulant response is posted directly after my response I have to assume it's aimed at me. I do not appreciate being referred to as a pedant etc and perhaps I'll put that down as your still being in shock from having your camera stolen but do try to get over it because it can't be doing your blood pressure much good.

I'm sorry if you didn't understand my response so let me explain it in simpler terms for you. I believe f/2 is the fastest lens available for a compact digital camera and means that you can take the same shot at the same shutter speed in half the amount of light than other compact camera with a lens with maximum aperture of f/2.8.

For you to say that this is no use to you suggests to me that you're not familiar with the basic principles of photography, hence my response, meaning that it makes no difference which camera a f/2 lens is on it will always be twice as fast as any camera with a lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. I hope this helps you start to grasp the basics of photography.

I have a D-Lux 4, which is the only compact I'd recommend beyond a LX-3 but I didn't think that you'd find that very useful so I didn't suggest it.

Incidentally: "infidels" and "jihad" - is there a hidden agenda here?

Pete.

You already found it. The NEX is the only alternative that performs better than the LX3. Don't freak out so easily.

That, I must admit, has me completely stumped...

Far be it from me to question manufacturers' claims but could you explain to someone with little understanding of photography why my f/2.8 Nikon 35ti performs better in low light than my LX3 at the same ISO and shutter speed wide open?

That's due to the sensor. His point is that based on a two cameras of a similar sensor size (pocket cams) the f2 lens is giving you a benefit you aren't even recognizing. If the lens was f4 you would have automatically had a camera half as usable as far as imaging noise is concerned.

I too found your rant to be a very odd response, and inappropriate. Also, using words like infidel and jihad is probably not a good idea in the present global political climate unless referencing or creating reportage work.

By the sound of it, is it conceivable that you've just mislaid the camera? Have you contacted the lost & found property or the police yet? Also, have you considered seeking medical help?
