BMJ Posted August 16, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I have a Digilux 2 but I am very interested in the X1 (alternatively M8 + 28/f2.8). However I can't really figure out what would be the big difference between the D2 and X1 other than the obvious difference in size and fixed lens. I think I will try shooting with the D2 with the lens locked at 35 mm. to see if that is a limitation. Is the D2 AF speed similar or is the X1 faster - read over and over again that it's slow, but I think the D2 is slow as well by todays standards? I noticed there is a ring around the lens that can be removed, is it for mount of close up or tele lenses? I will appreciate any comments, thanks. dovla Posted August 16, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2010 Image quality is the difference, from the feel of the camera i prefer my D2. I don't own the X1 but have had it on my hands few times.
richam Posted August 16, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 16, 2010 I have all three that you are considering. Here's my take: Digilux 2: Big and bulky but good quality images at low to moderate ISO. (One of my Digilux 2 images made it into the LUF forum book -- please consider buying the book as it contributes to cancer research). The EVF is not very comfortable to use IMHO. Also, there may be difficulties finding batteries and service in the not too distant future. Digilux 2 with the original sensor is prone to failure; mine was replaced free by Leica. If yours has not been upgraded, you may be subject to a sensor failure. M8/ 28mm Elmarit: The CCD sensor produces excellent quality images up to mid-ISO (640 or perhaps 1250). Smaller than D2 but a bit heavier. And of course more expensive. My first choice for tripod work and whenever I want the best image I can get when I have the time and space for serious photo work. Interchangeable lenses are a plus, but they come at a price -- sensor cleaning needs to be done regularly, especially if you are in at dusty environment when changing lenses. X1: A nearly perfect back to basics camera. Excellent images up to ISO 3200 with the CMOS sensor (although ISO 3200 is a bit grainy it can be nicely managed with noise reduction software). Image quality rivals but does not quite equal the M8, at least at low to moderate ISO. Light, simple controls, easy to use in general. It needs the external finder, but still makes a compact, go everywhere package when the external finder is attached. That's my opinion, anyway. Good luck with your decision. wda Posted August 16, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2010 Hi BMJ, I have all three under your consideration. Not one replaces the other; each has its strengths. However the D2 is clearly outclassed by the M8 and X1 when you come to the all-important quality factor. Much depends on your interests and requirements. Certainly a trial with your D2 simulating the X1 focal length makes good sense. Also remember that the excellent optical finder for the X1 is an optional extra. I would not be without it. My first choice for serious photography would always be the M8. But, on non-photographic outings, like shopping or visiting the dentist, I always have the X1 with me and have captured some excellent pictures with it. BMJ Posted August 16, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted August 16, 2010 Hi Thanks for your replies. They make me think even more of the M8 solution - but still the X1 will be an image quality update - uhh, life is hard So far no one commented on the D2 AF speed compared to X1 - please tell me it's faster than the D2. Best regards BMJ

Personally I don't find the D2's AF speed particularly slow unless I've foolishly left it on macro focus. Sorry, never used an X1. Yet. Pete.

The AF speed is very acceptable under normal daylight conditions I haven't tried yet in poor light. I am referring to the write to card speed. If you shoot jpg only it is fast. BMJ Posted August 17, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted August 17, 2010 Hi Thanks for your replies, I will try the X1 at the nearest shop - as long as it is faster than the D2 and it makes better images I will be happy. I don't think the 36 mm lens is a real problem - the reason I use the 90 mm on the D2 is to reduce DOF - and the X1 to be capable of that due to larger sensor. By the way, no one heard anything about future use of the thread on the outside of the lens? close up lens? Best regards BMJ
