Looking to buy an M8

I was about to buy an M8 around the time the issues became known. I backed off but would like to understand what the current position is.

Is the banding problem fixed on current production?

Are IR filters the only solution to the Magenta cast issue. Do these filters degrade image quality in any way?

Apologies if there is a definitive answer elsewhere but I couldn't find one.

Thanks.

The 'current position' is that you don't have an M8 and others do... and are enjoying them greatly.

It turns out there were NO problems, just a conspiracy by a few people in the forums who were WAY down on the lists...

they invented these problems to get people to hold back cancel their orders... so they would bubble up the chain...

it worked for a while, but the M8 is still scare as h_!!....

OOOpps sorry, I guess that was a real question!

Looks like most will be fixed in HW, FW and filters

Griping will continue till the M9 comes out at which time a new round of b_tching will start

I hope well before that you will have an M8 and enjoy it as much as I do.

best, and really, welcome to the forum, a great bunch. I have learned a lot.

Yeah

i am with Victor. So many people have denied themselves the use of a most wonderful imaging tool because it wasn't "perfect" and it seemed much more productive to sit and complain in these forums in a way that didn't address issues known and ready to be solved with issues that never were a problem and which helped to create really great images. It is my (humble) opinion that we "must" make our suppliers "aware" of flaws, but must do it in a way that recognizes the wholeness of the equation. I have and still have an original hardware M8 with version 1.06 firmware bought and started using on November 8th. So while many were pontificating about issues presumed and real, I was out shooting with this tool. I really don't want to put anyone down because I always assume the motives are positive, but these threads have gone vitriolic to a point where nothing constructive seems possible. Please, if you have an M8, go outdoors and shoot and see what is possible. You will be rewarded like you never imagined. If you don't actually have an M8, don't come on the threads and become an academic bitcher. Borrow, rent, steal an M8 and then go outdoors and see what is possible. You will be surprised and grateful.

Cheers and best to all

If I were you, I wouldn't read the posts on the web concerning the M8. Buy it and a lens, and take pictures as you normally would (and don't even put the filter on the lens). Then see it for yourself if you get what you expect from the camera.

2nd Edit: Please NO "M8 Test Shots"; seen enough.

Mark,

I agree with what has been said. Here is a casual shot with my new M8. Not a great image artistically but I was amazed with the tonal range, colour fidelity and low noise. The shot is ISO 640 1/90s at 2.8 with NO filters or post processing. I am delighted with this camera. Get one!!

Sorry if this is a bit of a"Test Shot" - I personally think my wife is rather nice to look at :)

Thanks for the replies but all I wanted was answers to the above.

For many people, the magenta "issue" isn't an issue at all. For those for whom it is an issue, much can be done with profiles, but to cure the issue fully, a filter needs to be used. However, there are hundreds of great M8 shots available, taken without filters, which demonstrate that in most situations, they are not necessary.

The filters will "degrade" an image as much as any filter degrades an image. If you do shoot in situations where the magenta caste is an issue, the filter will improve the image...

Mark,

I don't have an M8 but from what I have read on this forum, the original banding issues have been fixed by Leica. Some users are still picking up a 'streak' where there is a strong light source just outside the frame (there's a thread here somewhere) but it sounds like it will be covered with the next firmware update. It seems like a very minor issue as it only happens when the said light source is at a certain point, slight variance in position and it goes again.

As for the filters, yes you will need to use them to eradicate the IR problem when it is a problem. Personally I mostly keep a UV filter on my lenses and I really don't think you would ever tell the difference between a photo taken with or without one.

James,

Thanks for the reply. I've always used a UV filter on DSLR lenses anyway, more as a lens protector than for UV purposes. If the image quality degradation isn't noticeable then I have no problem at all with that.

So the banding is fixed? That's good news. I thought M8's were recalled though? Surely firmware upgrades are done by the user?

Any new M8s that now pop up at retail have most likely already been reworked by Leica in Solms. So, you should be good to go as long as you grab a few filters and watch for any future firmware updates.

You'll find that most who have an M8 are pleased with the camera. Like others in this thread have mentioned, I'm looking forward to getting my M8 recall note from Leica but dreading it at the same time as it looks like it might be some time before I get it back.

Unless your intent is to torture test the M8 until it misbehaves, you'll be overjoyed with this camera -- as I am. And if you're already an M shooter and like the style of photography it imposes, you'll like it even more -- as I do. Don't hesitate, get one!
