What storage system for files?

I have about ten years of digital photographs stored on my computer now, grouped in self-assigned folders. (and backed up elsewhere of course) I use the Adobe Organizer to display the thumbnails on the dateline, but I cannot be bothered to use their tags, too cumbersome and timeconsuming to add. Then there is the problem, if I move the files to another HD, for space reasons for instance, or reorganize the folders themselves, the program has difficulties finding the original files again. And it automatically adds all kind of nonsense, intermediate files in Photoshop, any other Jpegs it happens to find, etc. Surely there must be better archiving and organizing programs. Especially for digitally chaotic types like me.

Jaap,

I am researching this now for myself. Two products I have found that seem to be the best are:

iView Media Pro

Extensis Portfolio 8

I think I will purchase iView Media Pro. There is a trial download. There is a new version coming out in the Spring and if you buy now you get a free upgrade. I haven't used it (or any) yet so I cannot comment on it. There are plenty of reviews of the various products on the web.

Here is a good book on the topic: The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers, by Peter Krogh

The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers

Happy hunting.

Charles
