At last... M8 arrived

Having read so many threads with members receiving their M8's - I couldn't resist in saying that I've got mine. And, in the tradition of M8's thought I'd post photo number one here.

It's night here, so I'm in my study and just took a picture of what's on my desk.... cropped it a little and, for the first time in years, didn't need to sharpen or change anything in Photoshop.. Those that have read my very few posts over the years know that I'm not a professional (as this shot testifies), however I love using Leicas and am absolutely thrilled with this new one. It's like discovering my MP all over again.

PS - thank you Guy - problem solved. It was the Summicron 50mm f/2 Dual Range. Found the answer here, eventually.

I hope to be out at the weekend taking shots!

I was reminded of just how useful this Forum is when I became anxious on a couple of M8 related issues - the regulars that I spoke with and traded emails with were immediately enthusiastic to help and talk.... We all squabble from time to time (not me as I'm not qualified to join in!) - but it's a great team when required.

Almost as impressive as the camera!

Very nice shot Nelia. But didn't you do something impossible here? Wasn't that one of few lenses impossible to use with M8 ??

No, its got a "pull-out" for shots closer than one meter. Otherwise it looks (and acts) like a slightly beefy rigid summicron. I never did understand why it is not usable on the M8.

They're shotgun cartridges....

The 50mm lens that cannot be used with the M8 is the Summicron 50mm f/2 Dual Range. But the M8 manual is not completely clear - is says 'close focus' rather than DR.

As mentioned above, collapsable lenses are awkward with the M8 (and RD-1).

I'm using a Summicron 50mm f/2 - but not the DR version. However I was quite anxious that I was using the wrong lens, but now I know....

Great camera! I'm very happy with it...... Hopefully one day the sun will shine in the UK and I can bore you all rigid with photos of sports cars!!

Hi Neil, nice to see your shot [for other members, Neil and I traded some emails because he thought the standard 50 f2.0 was not usable, rather then the DR].

I am contemplating buying a used DR (perhaps the word "used" is superfluous, here) and having the long cam removed so I can use the standard range of the DR on the M8. There is a posting here from someone who has done this and the pic is terrific. This is a special lens.

I, too, was alerted to the shotgun shells. It IS a great pic. If you carry the belt when you shoot, no one will notice the camera!

Regards,

Thanks Bill, and for your offer of advice too....

I'm not sure the cartridges is a great shot, but I liked the warm light - it made an unfriendly object seem less so somehow!

I hear there's a new wide triple lens and a lightweight 28/2.8. Can't wait.

Come on sunshine!
