Light leakage between frames?

This is called "halation", and the PRIMARY cause is light so intense that it reaches right through the film and reflects off the pressure plate. But also pipes through the film base and the gelatin itself, as other have speculated. Or gets diffused by the gelatin.

Most modern films have anti-halation backing - a dye on the plastic film base to block excess light. It is the red stuff you may have noticed washing out in the chemicals if you do your own processing - esp. with Tmax films.
