Hi

I am having problems with my M3 film take up spool.

I can't seem to get the film end into the little slot.

It is so tight I have to pry up on the little slot with my thumb nail to get the film leader into the spool.

What is the secret?

Thanks

Hi

Have a look here:

Hope this is some help.

Kind regards,

I know how to load the film, all I asking is should I pry open the little slot where you insert the end of the film, or should I just look for a new spool.

Thanks

Hello MachineGun,

It might be worthwhile to figure out how to do the one you have as it is.

The video is accurate.

Sometimes things take a while.

Generally these are tight but once you figure them out they hold well.

Perhaps you might try sliding the end into the clip from a number of slightly different positions as well as holding both film and spool in slightly different manners.

I've never known anyone to need to force or bend the clip, although yours could be the exception.

Here's a thought though: Generally M-3 loading spools are like people. If you force them you are probably doing something wrong.

Practice with an expendable roll while you are watching TV or doing nothing. It may be helpful.

If the end of the film becomes damaged you can always reshape the end and the leader and continue using it for practice.

If you practice over and over with an expendable film and work all of the controls not just loading and unloading and learn the functions and proclivities of the camera well then you can more concentrate on exposure, composition and so on when taking pictures.

The same in any field or with any mechanism.

The two sentences just above may well improve your photography and increase the pleasure you get from it.

Just a thought.

I got a quick load (Yes - they do work in M-3's. I have one.) in the early 1970's because it is a lot easier. I found the original spool (Which I still have.) obnoxious. Not impossible though.

BTW: Quick loads not only work in M-3's they are actually much easier and faster to use once installed and operated properly than many people on this Forum think.

They originally came in a box with a sheet which had pictures for installation but no instructions for use. This may well be why so many self-taught users are so unhappy with them.

You only install it once. I did it in the early 1970's and it's still just fine, never needed to be adjusted, tightened, etc.

They are ballpark as fast as a contemporary film M quick load to both load and unload just as for simple adding and subtracting an abacus is as fast as an electronic calculator.

People often mention on this Forum that they are available, apparently because few people like them.

If you would like to find out the how, etc of quick loads, talk to me.

BTW, If you decide to change I would none-the-less first try to master the original spool. Probably not the end of the World, you know.

Best Regards,

Michael

Hi

It may be the spool, but if the film pulls off it on rewind it is probably ok.

Chewing fingernails is your best option.

Buy a second spool and preload film end - by alternating spools, is faster.

But a 2nd spool may be the same, it is like riding a bicycle, you need to work out what you are doing wrong yourself, you have to slip in the film sideways try 45 degrees to get it started then wiggle, to straighten it up and get some more in, the film does not have to bottom in the clip merely be secure enough to not fall out as you fire blank frames, or...

Buy a quick load kit, they are slip in and fewer parts to drop, I'd not say they were quicker. And they need a knack as well.

I frequently use a Canon P, instead of a M2, cause I can load while jogging.
