It is a very expensive process. I had a small part made for my 70mm film Combat Graflex. Including having the broken part laser scanned, a drawing made, then a print file written and finally printed in titanium (not hugely different to steel price on a small component like this). I got very little change from £500. See the drawing below for the part concerned. I do have a print file for a film trimming template (ANZOO) for the 250FF or GG Reporter cameras, if anyone needs this.

With respect to manufacturing parts, I would like to put in a good word for S. K. Grimes in Woonsocket, RI.  They are the "Photographers' Machinist", the only such company I know of in the US.  Custom accessories and modifications are their mainstay.  They also do mechanical repairs, particularly older cameras that need unavailable replacement parts.  Their turnaround is weeks, and prices are reasonable.

The nearest equivalent we have in the UK are SRB-Griturn  www.srb-griturn.com/ . Always very helpful. If Leica had absolutely refused to supply a new shaft for my M7, they had said they would have a go at machining one for me.

Hi,

I've already recommended Jerzy but I've just received another camera and two lenses CLA's by him and, as always, an incredible job done.

A lens had a lot of dirt and fungus. The camera even required to push several times the shutter button to travel it.

Everything is now, as always, working perfectly as well as an extremely interesting report of the findings and work done including current speeds back to factory specs.

So once more, he's the only one that I trust to service my more delicate gear.

I am not sure that I have the time to do that at the moment, I’m afraid, as I have a proper job that pays my mortgage too.

This thread was started 11 years ago, and I know that some of the original wiki list specialists are no longer in business, so It’s not a simple task.

Will van Manen lost to UK members which is a great shame. His and Kathy's Six Bit Coding is great, as are their other services.

1. As of the 1st of May 2021 we only work on Leica equipment (and in exceptional cases on other high end equipment; please call us for that, so we can discuss the possibilities). Due to this change, the website will be modified within the next few days.

2. Until further notice we can not accept any work from the United Kingdom. This is due to an enormous amount of duties and customs charges levied against us that we can't claim back and are unsustainable.

For those who have not seen it, Don Goldberg is no longer accepting or working on M5s. It listed on the Leica M parts page of his website.

Sending in for my first repair (a rangefinder alignment on an M10-P).

How do you guys normally do it? Do you send in the full original box? Do you send in the smaller paperboard/foam one that houses just the body? Not the Leica box at all?

Will be sending from a UPS store in NYC to DAG, so we can assume that the packaging box itself will be well protected — just curious about what exactly goes inside.

I get a box from Canada Post, along with a shock absorber like bubble wrap or foam knobs. I wrap the camera in the bubble wrap and stuff it into the box, which I then tape closed. I create the required labels and take the whole thing to Canada Post who then take over the routing and delivery. It all works quite well, so far. Mainly I make sure the camera is well insulated from bounces and accidents and jerk handlers. Using UPS should be roughly the same .

This goes pretty far beyond what would be called a repair, but a friend of mine in California just had his M3 completely renovated by a guy in England named Alan Starkie. He's so busy he now only accepts cameras in England but the work he does is unbelievable. My friend's M3 got a titanium shutter curtain, new viewfinder, new cocking mechanism, paint inside and out. Have a look but please don't drool on your monitor or keypad.

Alan does some amazing repairs. I had a Combat Graflex 70mm film, motor wind, rangefinder camera, where most things either did not work or only worked intermittently. This is a very complicated camera originally designed by John Maurer the New York based aviation camera specialist and then productionised by Hubert Nerwin, one of the designers of the Contax RF. I managed to find a 1950's vintage US Navy service manual and using that, Alan completely rebuilt it to full working condition. We had to have some parts remade by 3D printing them in titanium. Alan has serviced many of my quite extensive collection of Leicas and quite a few of the older lenses. Like many third party Leica repairers, he is struggling to source parts as Leica will no longer sell spare parts. I had to send a begging letter to the CEO to get a new intermediate gear shaft for my M7, when it was with Alan.

Thanks for this. I've just been in communication with Anthony from Camera Obscura. Very impressed with the communication.  I'm just about to send my IIIf and Summitar for CLA/repair/restoration.

I looked at the Camera Works website but they are no longer accepting repairs from outside the UK.
