Turnaround for 6 bit coding - Europe

I sent three lenses to Solms on 28th November. It was 5th December before they were shown as "in repair" and they're still there. Previously, it's taken 4 - 6 weeks.

Don't you just love Leica's "In Repair"? This is the proverbial "black hole" into which products sent to Solms seems to just disappear. I sent a 35-70 R Elmarit back to N.J which ended up in Solms for repair. After the initial shock of $1185 for repair of the aperture control ring and zoom mechanism (but the lens is worth it .......... right?) I am now 13 weeks into the process and the best I can get from N.J. who are communicating with Solms is that the lens is "in repair." I have requested that N.J. get me an estimated time to complete the repairs, not just to say they are in process. You would think I had asked for the keys to the Da Vinci code. Good lord the woman who I talked to in N.J. couldn't seem to understand why i would need such an estimate! Love Leica products, hate Leica arrogance. If you are watching Leica, learn to understand that you need your customers much more than we need you!!!!

When you send in an item, you get a repair number. Assuming they use every number, I checked how the number has increased between two repairs I sent in. Answer: 19600 in 22 weeks, so they are receiving nearly 900 items a week, 180 a day on average for service or repair. It's a busy place.

You can just imaging their hearts sinking when the DHL/Fedex/UPS truck comes around the corner...

I don't want to make you feel even worse but in the late 80's I sent in a 28mm to Leica. All that needed to be done was putting back a rod on the outside of the lens so that the lens shade could be held by it. This apparently very complicated operation took them 2 years to complete. No yelling, begging or threatning helped.

Leica, like the divine one, works in mysterious ways and at its own pace. :D

If you are in the EU, where there is then no customs hassle, you should definitely send directly to Solms, going through the dealer only adds to the delay and makes them grumpy because they might actually have to do some work to justify their existence.

Hi there, my M8 was due for pickup on December 18, I included 2 lenses to be coded, and if needed serviced.

The camera and lenses arrived in Solms December 27!

More then a week to get from Ireland to Germany...some courier

Then they sent me a letter with a estimated price for the coding and service which arrived on January 2, asking me to complete forms and return them.

I called to the provided number, and requested coding/service by phone.

I was told that lenses might take up to 2 weeks.

no answer on my M8 progress.

I was told before, by Leica Customerservice that there would be a return time of 10 days, and I could expect to get my camera/lenses returned to me the first week of this year?

Will keep you posted

Reginald

Was the courier GLS? If so, they are more like a slightly more focussed parcel service than the regular mail and here in the UK, they had over to ParcelForce who are not the sharpest tool in the box. Also this is a tracked service but it is not an express service.

I'm waiting for GLS right now to shuffle along and pick up my camera. If they don't show, I'll just send it DHL instead who are excellent.

Thank you all,

it seems this is not the best time to send lenses to Solms, as they are pretty busy with coding many lenses and with the early M8 repairs.

Christmas season didn't help either.

I guess I'll go with the "self coding" for a while, then maybe in February/March I'll send them.

hi,

yes, I completely agree with u.

If it is only for coding lenses it would be sensible to wait another 2 to 3 mos until the first rush is over. I don't think it makes sense to complain about the long turnover times as most likely Leica is drowning at the mom in upgrade and repair orders.

Regards,

Well, it's gone 6pm, the courier was meant to pick up my camera today and, guess what, it's still here. I wonder what the German for "hopelessly incompetent" is?

Hi Mark - same problem - they did try to pick mine up on the 22nd Dec (but I wasn't here, and the email from solms said 4th January).

I've also tried to talk to someone at ParcelForce about this . . . . . and as far as I can see you can't.

It's damned irritating when you've waited in all day for them to pick up.

The Leica M8 is all about playing the waiting game. Right now:

- I'm waiting for my second M8

- I'm waiting for my first pair of free filters

- I'm waiting for my second set of free filters

- I'm waiting to buy the other filters I will need

- I'm waiting for camera protectors

- I'm waiting for neoprene cases

- I'm waiting for wide carrying straps

- I'm waiting for hand grips

- I'm waiting for batteries

- I'm waiting for my first discounted lens

- I'm waiting for my second discounted lens

- I'm waiting for 3 lenses to come back from coding at Leica

- I'm waiting for Leica to tell me how the WATE is going to work

- I'm waiting for Firmware V1.10

- I'm waiting for Leica's courier to pick up my camera for fixing

Other than that, I'm fine.

LOL - well, I was going to send my new tri-elmar for coding until I read this thread . . . I've taken it out of the box, I think I'd rather use a felt tip pen for the time being!

I think it's time for a glass of wine.
