New Band is Firmware Bug

I managed to induce one of these bands, but only by shooting under torturous low-light conditions. I'm not totally dismissing the need to fix this problem, however the only thing it proved to me is that if you go looking for trouble, you'll find it. Shooting with my Canon 10D at the same time rendered useless results.

Sean-

Although the M8 is the prime concern now, Mark Norton and I have been worried about the new Tri-Elmar - it was clearly not designed to wear a filter regularly or to record its focal length for cyan correction calibration....we've heard that it may be undergoing a redesign, but we have also heard that it is shipping now...

Would be nice to know at least if it is "done" and M8 users should plan to buy now and put up with it, if we should wait for a redesign, if one is happening....the old Tri-Elmar redesign wasn't a qualitative change, but this one would be, and it would be a shame to buy now if it was going to be fixed.

Thanks!

I have found if I take a picture of my dogs ass at 2500 iso and push it 4 stops with a slight bit of back focus I can see an image of the baby Jesus when I view it at 400%

Sorry, it's been reported already, but perhaps not on the M8. (OnlinePhotographer.blogspot) But please report when his mother or father appears. I am sure that this exception can be handled in firmware.

I followed these instructions and saw David Hasselhoff

I always thought that was the same thing

Whilst I really understand the feeling behind this comment, I do think that these torture tests serve a really good purpose. It brings out all the potential problems in real life before they impact on that one important shot. See it in the same light as the "testing to destruction" of many other technical products. It has no relationship to reasonable use, but it brings out a lot of potential problems before they become actual problems.

I completely agree.

I tried this test (my dog didn't like it by the way - nor did I); but I saw an image of ten Leica engineers huddled around an operating table; they were all dressed in white Magenta coats with some kind of strange banding pattern on the fabric. I couldn't make out what was on the table, but there was also a priest, rabbi and imman in the room - not a good sign. Then I saw Terry Palin walk in - he announced that they were looking at an ex-M8, that the M8 was no more, that it was deceased. I countered that it was only sleeping, then I woke up.

I would be intigued to learn about the real world situations for which these so-called torture tests will reveal potential problems that could become actual. This is a camera not a bridge.

Steve, I agree, it's one of a long list of Leica things I'm waiting for - information on how the filter/lens hood/lens cap is going to work if a filter is required all the time and on how the cyan correction is going to work when the camera doesn't know the focal length.

I've asked Leica UK how it works and nothing has been forthcoming and I shouldn't have wasted my time doing so. I do wonder just how they fill their days up in Milton Keynes. They're not helping customers, that seems clear.

"Useless" is one of the more polite words which comes to mind.

I'll look into that. It's on my list of lenses to be tested.

Cheers,

Hi Jon,

Here is a picture posted by Yoshinori in the thread:

In this real world situation it is difficult to avoid the banding since the probability is reasonably high that there is going to be some light at the edge that will cause the banding.
