Leica M3 baseplate problem

I was closing up my Leica after removing a used spool of film, and the lever on the baseplate is stuck in the fully opened position and will not turn to the closed position. If I remove the baseplate from the camera then the lever is able to freely move between both the open and closed position. Please help me, hopefully there is a simple solution. I obviously did something wrong when trying to close it, but now am stuck.
