georgio Posted January 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Happy New year to all of you! I wonder if anybody has experience with 4 GB cards and the D-Lux 3. I just received a Ridata card and the card gives an error; I can't even format the card in the camera, since none of the buttons are accesable. (the card is O.K. since it works in my Palm Lifedrive) Since I know that the camera can handle 4 GB cards I would like to know which brands. Thanks. Advertisement Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Hi georgio, Take a look here 4 GB cards with D-Lux 3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dan58 Posted January 2, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 2, 2007 I got a D-Lux 3 for my father as a Christmas gift. Not knowing any better I got a Transcend 150X SD card. Found out that a "normal" SD card of over 2GB will NOT work with this camera. If you want over a 2GB card in a Leica D-Lux 3 you need a SDHC card. I got a 4GB Transcend 80X SDHC Class 6 card from MemoryTen and it works perfectly. Did not even format it. You get 780 best JPEG's or 170 RAW on the card. Not many vendors have these cards. Try Computer Memory Upgrade RAM Laptop DDR PC Memory Flash Memory Card at MemoryTen (p/n SDHC-4GB-80X-HC6-TR).
gepetto Posted January 2, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 2, 2007 George sorry to hear Ridata 4GB cards will not work in the DLUX3. Dan thanks for posting your experience with the Transcend Class6 card. I have two question's. How does the card perform in camera i.e. RAW write times? Second how are you transferring the data to a computer? Did you find a compatible SDHC card reader? TIA
dan58 Posted January 3, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 3, 2007 I have just shot JPEG's as my Dad just wants full auto snaps. It is about 2 frames a second with the card with JPEG's. For RAW i use my R9/DMR. I don't think the D-Lux 3 has a RAW buffer and it takes 5 seconds to write to the card before the next shot in RAW. Will try to time the camera tonight with a 150x 2GB card and the 4GB SDHC Class 6 card. I don't have a SDHC reader. I download from the camera. It is slow and not USB 2 speed. A SDHC card will not work in a SD reader. If speed is important I would get a bunch of 2GB SD cards. The SD cards are cheaper. I only got the SDHC card so my father would not have to change the card often as he only has the use of one arm.
gepetto Posted January 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 4, 2007 Thanks Dan. I have been using a Panasonic Pro SD 2GB card. I would like to get a 4GB card which the Transcend is the only Class 6 SDHC card so far on the market. I get around 3 second RAW right times with the Pana SD. The Class 6 card should give around the same hopefully. There is an SDHC card reader by Sandisk that can be bought in stores now for less than $20. It is a small device with no cord. dan58 Posted January 6, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 6, 2007 Transcend 2GB 150X card 4 sec. Transcend 4GB SDHC Class 6 takes 5 or 6 sec. It seems the SDHC cards are slower and more expensive than normal SD cards. You also can't get a reader yet. Much slower to download to your computer. Unless you must have the 4GB+ cards you would be better off with a 2GB or less SD card if you want speed.
Wally Posted March 18, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need a card for my new D-Lux 3 also. I'm going nuts trying to deside on the right memory card. I'm looking for the fastest card that I can find. 2GB or 4GB, (I prefer 4) Some are not compatable with the D-Lux 3, I'm told. Does size make a difference as far as read / write times?? I want to get the most speed out of my new toy. Does anyone have some experience with these cards? My biggest fear is my D-Lux 3 won't be compatable with the card that I get. Sandisc doesn't even list Leica on their site. Panasonic and others are listed as far as compatably suggestions. I'm kind of confused at this point. Regards, Wally . farnz Posted March 18, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 18, 2007 Walter, You're probably going to be limited by the speed of the camera's electronics. For example, Sandisk Extreme 111 cards will provide up to 20 Mb/s data transfer speed but you're unlikely to get much more than 6 Mb/s from your DL3. I have a DL2, which produces up to about 6 Mb/s in-camera transfer speed (as determined less than scientifically) but shares common electronics with the DL3; can anyone with a DL3 confirm or refute please? Pete.
Wally Posted March 18, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 18, 2007 Pete Now that explains a lot to me. That is why I was getting different suggestions as to what card to get. I suppose going to fast has no advantage, as far as speed (and cost) goes. I think I might consider a fast card anyway. Who knows, the future may hold another Leica. Thanks, Walt Any one else have any thoughts?
farnz Posted March 18, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 18, 2007 Wally, You're likely to notice the extra speed when you download images from your card to your PC/Mac, but again it depends on the data transfer speed of the electronics in your card reader. With most modern main-brand card readers you can expect to do better than 6Mb/s because they are designed to work with USB 2.0, which is 480Mb/s. HTH, Pete. Wally Posted March 21, 2007 Share #11 Posted March 21, 2007 Happy New year to all of you!I wonder if anybody has experience with 4 GB cards and the D-Lux 3. George I just got my new 2.0GB Sandisc Extreme 3 SDHC, put it in my D-Lux 3. Guess what? I got the same message that George got. Format the card. Hah. I can't format the card since I can't get past the message on the screen. The Leica instruction manual (page 18) says that you can use a 2GB and more if you get a SDHC card . I can't return the card since I sent for the rebate before I tryed the card. (Yeah dumb.) I had the card delivered in work. I didn't have the camera with me. I feel like I've been had by my favorite camera company. Regards, Walt
Wally Posted April 5, 2007 Share #12 Posted April 5, 2007 Update... SanDisc finally replaced the defective card. The new one works fine. I just poped it in the camera and shot pictures. Now I have to find a way to set the camera so I can get sharp pictures. I still can't help but compare pics with my M6 and Kodachrome 25 and Velvia. That is the only film that ever went into my M's. Does anyone have an suggestion as to the setup as a start?
